Mav Tennis Team Faces Alumni Saturday

The Mavericks get their first taste of competition when they square off against the Alumni Saturday night. The matches will begin at 6 p.m. at Hanscom Park Tennis Center, 3220 Ed Creighton Ave. Admission is free.
The Team
UNO returns six players from last year's North Central Conference championship squad that advanced to the NCAA II regional tournament. The Mavericks were 11-8-0 last year overall. UNO was 6-0 in the NCC and won the conference tournament. The Mavs lost in the regional championship match. Sophomore Rachel Faulk won the No. 2 singles title in the NCC meet last year and teamed with senior Maggie Russell to win the No. 1 doubles title.
The Coaches
Bill Nichols is in his seventh season as head coach. The 1980 Wichita State graduate has led UNO to two straight NCC titles and four trips to the NCAA II tournament and a 71-35 record. Nichols is the only head coach the Mavericks have had since starting the program in 2001. Prior to coming to UNO, Nichols guided the Wichita State men's team for 12 years, winning five Missouri Valley Conference titles. Former Maverick player Sarah Huls is in her second season as a graduate assistant coach. Huls is the career leader in singles and doubles victories.
Coming Up
The Mavericks will open regular season play on Sunday, Feb. 4, hosting Nebraska Wesleyan at 11 a.m. at Hanscom Park Tennis Center. UNO then goes on the road to play three matches on Feb. 9-10 in St. Peter, Minn.
