Mavs' Second-Half Rally Falls Short at St. Cloud S

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - A second-half rally fell short for the Nebraska-Omaha men's basketball team as the Mavericks lost a North Central Conference contest to St. Cloud State, 76-67, Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall.
The loss drops UNO to 11-9, 2-4 in NCC play. The Huskies go to 16-5, 5-1.
Zac Robinson hit consecutive 3-pointers, the first of which tied the game at 10-10 six minutes into the game. The second sparked a 12-3 UNO run for a nine-point lead with seven minutes left in the half. But led by David Dreas and Adam Sullivan, the Huskies chipped away at the lead, tying the game at 34-34 with one minute left. Dreas hit two free throws in the final seconds for a 36-34 St. Cloud State lead at the break.
Dreas led the Huskies with 16 in the first half, adding four assists. Sullivan hit four 3-pointers, going to the break with 14 points. Denny Johnston had 10 at the break for UNO, while Robinson had nine. The Mavericks shot 36.7 percent for the first half, while the Huskies shot 38.7 percent.
Despite a high volume of foul calls in the early part of the second half, both teams shot well and the score remained tight. A Michael Jenkins jumper made it 47-45 in favor of the Huskies with 13:09 to play. But from there, St. Cloud State went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes. Undaunted, the Mavericks continued to battle. Trailing 67-56 with 4:30 left, two free throws from Robinson started a 9-0 run. Robinson's fifth 3-pointer of the game with 2:20 left made the score 67-65.
But the Huskies' long-range shooters continued to hit and UNO had trouble converting free-throw opportunities.
Robinson led the Mavericks with 20 points, his 10th 20-point game of the year. Jenkins finished with 16. Johnston scored 15 with seven rebounds, while Jerry Bennett grabbed a team-high nine boards, adding eight points. Dreas led all scorers with 23 points, going 10-for-11 on free throw attempts. Sullivan scored 22, going 6-for-11 from 3-point range.
UNO returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 3, at South Dakota at 4 p.m.
