Red Team Upends White Team, 3-1
Oct 14, 2007 | Hockey
Senior captain Bryan Marshall scored the game-winning goal for the Red team Sunday afternoon as UNO held its annual Red-White scrimmage at Moylan IcePlex. A crowd of 500 crammed into the arena to watch as the Mavericks went through final preparations before opening their season Friday night at 7:05 against the University of Manitoba in the Mutual of Omaha Stampede.
Brandon Scero opened up the scoring halfway through the first period of the two-period scrimmage when he snapped a shot in traffic past goalie Jerad Kaufmann at 13:30 with assists from Mick Lawrence and Juha Uotila, giving the Red team a 1-0 lead.
The White squad was able to tie the score, 1-1, shortly after intermission when Danny Charleston collected a lose puck in the neutral zone and beat goalie Eric Aarnio on a breakaway
A defensive struggle for most of the second period, Marshall put the Red team up 2-1 when he took a pass from freshman defenseman Alain Goulet the length of the ice and put the game-winning goal past Jeremie Dupont with only 57 seconds remaining.
Scero iced the victory by adding an empty-net goal, his second score of the day, that pushed the Reds' lead to 3-1.
The Mavericks will hold Media Day on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Qwest Center before opening competition Friday.
