Beale Breaks Assist Record as Mavs Blank Vikings

Two record-setting assists from Brandie Beale and a stellar defensive effort helped the University of Nebraska-Omaha soccer team to its eighth win in a row, a 2-0 victory over Augustana, in its final North Central Conference game, Friday afternoon at the UNO Soccer Field.
The Mavericks (12-5, 10-2 NCC) controlled the tempo of the entire match, keeping the ball in the Vikings' zone seemingly throughout the game. UNO fired off 31 total shots, nine on goal. Augustana (7-8-3, 3-6-2 NCC) managed only one shot, by Alicia DeHaan, on the day.
Although the Mavericks kept the pressure on offensively, it wasn't until the 66:40 mark that they found the net, as Dani McCawley scored her seventh of the year, heading in a corner kick from Beale. It was Beale's eighth helper of the year, and the 34th of her career, surpassing Stephanie Kirby's record.
Beale picked up another assist three minutes later, sending a pass in to MaryClaire Murnan who headed home her fifth of the year at 69:45.
Mavs goalie Ellen Petersen (9-5) made the save on Augustana's lone shot for her third consecutive shutout, and extending her scoreless minutes streak to 356:22. The last goal she allowed was at the 3:38 mark of a match against South Dakota four games ago. UNO's defensive trio of Niya Branch, Jessica Powers and Whitney Teleschaw made Petersen's life easy, scarcely allowing the Vikings to penetrate the zone.
Having closed out their final regular season in the North Central Conference, the Mavericks now wait to see who their first opponent will be for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which begins Nov. 9.
