Mavericks Capture 3rd Straight NCC Title

The Mavericks, shutout in four singles championship matches, claimed their third straight North Central Conference tennis title Saturday with a pair of doubles wins at Hanscom Park Tennis Center.
Amy Pierson and Katie Spahn teamed for the title at No. 2 doubles with an 8-6 win over St. Cloud State's Kristie Eull and Dawn Olsen. At No. 3 doubles, Kylie Roe and Sara Bredfeldt defeated Molly Maurer and Katie Hoverstein of North Dakota, 8-4. Maggie Russell and Rachel Faulk lost in their No. 1 doubles final, 9-7, to the Minnesota State team of Marina Bugaenco-Kate Maland.
UNO had 53 points to St. Cloud State's 44. North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth tied for third with 39 points. The rest of the field including Minnesota State, Mankato, 36; South Dakota, 22, and Augustana, 19.
Earlier in the day, Rachel Faulk, Maggie Russell, Pierson and Roe all lost in their championship matches. Bredfeldt and Spahn won their third-place matches.
The Mavericks, ranked No. 2 currently in the North Central region, will learn on April 25 if they will host a first-round regional meet on May 4-5. The top two teams in the region will be hosts for the four-team meets.
