Emporia State Ends Maverick Season, 5-2

EMPORIA, Kan. -- Emporia State captured two doubles wins and three singles victories Friday to eliminate the Mavericks in the NCAA II North Central Regional second round with a 5-2 decision. The Hornets will advance to the NCAA II final sixteen, while UNO ends the season at 13-6.
The Mavericks' Amy Pierson and Katie Spahn claimed a doubles win over Audrey Sherman and Molly Bowman, but ESU's Marcela Bayon and Karly Schultz defeated UNO's Kelsey Haas and Kylie Roe, 8-2. Emporia State's Natalie Villaflor and Lacey Luina edged UNO's Rachel Faulk and Maggie Russell, 9-7, to get the 2-1 advantage after doubles.
In singles play, Faulk downed Bayon at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2. But ESU swept the Nos. 2-4 matches in straight sets to clinch the win. Villaflor defeated Russell at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1; Luina downed Pierson at No. 3, 6-0, 6-4, and Schultz defeated Spahn at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2.
Russell, the only senior on the Maverick squad, closed her career as UNO's all-time leader in singles and doubles victories. She had a career mark of 49-26 in singles and 63-20 in doubles.
