UNO Lights Up Regis in Home Opener, 7-1

Senior Dani McCawley and sophomore Mykala Hanson scored two goals each as the University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team opened its home schedule with a convincing 7-1 win over non-conference oppponent Regis Friday afternoon at the new UNO Soccer Field.
The Mavericks earned their first win of the season, rebounding from two season-opening losses in California. The Rangers' record now also stands at 1-2.
McCawley opened the scoring for the Mavs at the 19:25 mark, heading in a corner kick from junior Casey Bigsby. Amanda Iwansky made the score 2-0 at 24:02, jamming in her own rebound after a corner from Tara Wegehaupt. UNO's third goal of the half also came after a corner, with McCawley again using her head to knock one home, with Lindsey Nealon getting the assist.
The Mavs's fourth goal also came on a corner, but Wegehaupt's kick deflected off a Regis player for an own goal. Hanson, who transfered this season from College of St. Mary, scored two consecutive goals to extend the lead to 6-0. After Kelsey Hovden scored Regis' lone goal at the 82:05 mark, Hanson earned a quick assist, chipping a pass to MaryClaire Murnan, who scored at 82:10.
UNO returns to action Saturday, Sept. 8, with a noon game at Truman State, kicking off a three-game road stint. The Mavs return home Sept. 21 against North Central Conference opponent North Dakota at 4 p.m.
