Mavs Host Doane to Open New Year

The 18th-ranked University of Nebraska-Omaha men's basketball team opens 2008 with a four-game homestand, beginning with a nonconference game against long-time rival Doane on Friday night.
The Mavs finished 2007 riding a four-game win streak, sweeping a two-game set at Montana State-Billings. The homestand will continue next week with the opening game of the final North Central Conference season, against Augustana, then conclude with two more nonconference matchups with York and Nebraska-Kearney.
The Tigers are 6-7 on the year, with a 2-3 record in Great Plains Athletic
Conference play. Dane Cruz leads the team with a stout 20.6 ppg, adding 3.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists. Brett McFarland is the top rebounds with 6.7 rpg,
scoring 9.5 points. Tyler Cyboron adds 10.9 ppg.
The rivalry between the Mavericks and Tigers dates back at least 60 years, with UNO holding a 45-13 advantage. The Mavs won the last meeting, 81-60, on Dec. 18, 2006.
