Thommes, Mach Lead UNO to Sweep Over Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Junior middle blocker #Ellen Thommes# and freshman rightside hitter #Lizzy Mach# combined for 26 kills on .480 hitting to lead the University of Nebraka at Omaha to its second-straight sweep as the Mavericks recorded a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-20) victory at Missouri Western in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association volleyball action Friday night.
With the win, the Mavericks improved to 9-9 overall on the season and 5-3 in the MIAA. Missouri Western remained winless in the league, falling to 3-20 overall and 0-7 in conference play, after suffering their 11th-straight loss.
Thommes recorded a match-high 14 kills with no errors while hitting .560 in the win. She also added two blocks. Mach hit .400, registering a career-high 12 kills while adding two blocks and three digs.
Junior outside hitter #Sara Kampschnieder# narrowly missed recording a double-double with nine kills and a match-high 12 digs.
Freshman setter #Emily Myers# directed the UNO offense to a .218 attack percentage while dishing out 41 assists to go along with three services aces and two kills.
The UNO defense held Missouri Western to a .108 attack percentage, recording 50 digs and four team blocks in the victory.
Both Mach and Thommes helped UNO squeak out the first set win, 25-23. Mach registered five kills in the first frame on .417 hitting. The only other Maverick to hit above .000 was Thommes who connected on three kills while hitting .375. With the score knotted at 18, two service aces by Myers and two kills by Mach, including the set-winner, helped UNO pull out the win. The Mavericks committed nine attack errors and hit .162 in the first set.
Thommes blasted six kills and hit .667 to pave the way for UNO in the second set as UNO hit .175 as a team. Freshman #Angie Reicks and junior Kayla Jansen# combined for 11 second-set digs and Kampschnieder, Mach and Thommes teamed for four blocks to help the Mavericks hold the Griffons to a -.119 attack percentage as UNO won handily, 25-15.
Nebraska-Omaha heated up offensively in the third set, hitting .364 as a team. Mach and Thommes connected for 11 kills while Myers tallied 15 assists to lead the way for UNO. The Mavericks were also aided by Kampschnieder's two aces, two kills, and four digs in pulling out the third-set win, 25-20.
The Mavericks will continue MIAA action when they head to Kirksville, Mo. on Saturday for a 6 p.m. match at 12th-ranked Truman State.
