Mavericks Host Missouri Western, Emporia State

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team will return to action this week with a pair of home matches against MIAA foes. The Mavericks will play host to Missouri Western on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. and Emporia State on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.
Last Week
UNO (7-3-0, 5-3-0 MIAA) concluded a four-game road trip last week with a split of two MIAA matches. The Mavs cruised to a 2-0 win against Emporia State before falling 4-3 to Washburn.
Freshmen #Jerica Kuncl and Danielle Cheney# each netted a goal as they helped the Mavericks post a 2-0 win against Emporia State.
Washburn was able to jump on the Mavs early, racing out to an early 3-0 lead. UNO was able to get on the scoreboard just before halftime on a goal by #Melanie Patrick#. Washburn answered back early in the second half, giving the Lady Blues a 4-1 advantage. Senior #Casey Bigsby# led a late Maverick comeback, scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes, but it wasn't enough as UNO dropped their third game of the year.
Scouting Missouri Western
Missouri Western (2-10-2, 1-8-1 in MIAA) is coming off their second win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Southwest Baptist. Defensively, the Griffons are led by goalkeeper Jenna Weis. Weis leads the MIAA in saves with 105. Midfielder Audrey Henderson leads the team offensively with three goals and one assist for seven points.
Scouting Emporia State
Emporia State (3-8-1, 1-6-1 MIAA) opened the season with two straight wins, before going 1-8-1 in their last 10 matches. Offensively, the Hornets are led by Alicia Smith (3 goals, 1 assist) and Alison Germany (2 goals, 3 assists).
The Series
Thursday's match will be just the second all-time meeting with Missouri Western. UNO defeated the Griffons 1-0 earlier this year in the first meeting between the two schools.
UNO holds a 2-0-1 edge against Emporia State. UNO dropped Emporia State 2-0 last week in their first meeting since 2004.
The Coaches
Head coach #Don Klosterman# has compiled a 164-36-7 overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under his direction, UNO has advanced to at least the NCAA Quarterfinals in six straight seasons, including the 2005 National Championship. Klosterman also has been named the National Coach of the Year twice (2002, 2005).
Jeff Hansen is in his third season with the Griffons and has compiled a 7-40-6 mark. Emporia State is coached by Jim Schneiderhahn. In his third year, Schneiderhahn has a 6-42-2 record with the Hornets.
Next Week
The Mavs will battle three MIAA foes next week. UNO opens the week on the road when they travel to Kirksville, Mo. to make-up a postponed game with No. 25 Truman State (9-3-1, 5-3-1 MIAA) on Monday, Oct. 20 at noon. The Mavericks will then host Washburn (8-5-1, 4-4-0 MIAA) on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. and Northwest Missouri State (7-4-2, 3-4-2 MIAA) on Saturday, Oct. 18. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. with the Bearcats.
