
Three More Mavericks Earn Player of the Week Honor

OMAHA, Neb. – Good results for University of Nebraska at Omaha athletic teams led to good news for three of its student-athletes. Senior quarterback Zach Miller, senior midfielder #Amanda Iwansky and junior middle blocker Ellen Thommes# were all named player of the week in their respective sports by the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. They join UNO junior defenseman Eddie DelGrosso who was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's defensive player of the week earlier on Monday.
Miller was the MIAA's offensive player of the week. It's the third time he's received the honor this season. He ran for a career high 239 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Mavericks to a 34-14 win at Washburn University last Saturday. Miller has now run and thrown for more than 1,000 yards this season, the first time he's done so in his career at UNO. The native of Weston , Neb. is the school's all-time leading scorer with 306 points. He ranks in the top 10 in 8 offensive categories. He'll lead the Mavs into the NCAA Division II Football Championship on Saturday when they visit Pittsburg State at 12 p.m.
Iwansky also earned offensive player of the week honors. She scored the overtime game winner as the Mavericks beat Southwest Baptist 1-0 in soccer on Nov. 6. She followed that performance with two assists in the Mavs stunning 3-0 upset of sixth-ranked Central Missouri on Nov. 8. For the season, the native of Columbus, Neb. has three goals and two assists for 8 points. She and her teammates will take on Texas A&M Commerce in the first round of the NCAA Division II Soccer Championship on Friday, Nov. 14 at Warrensburg, Mo.
Thommes was named the MIAA's hitter of the week for the second time this season.The 6-foot-0 junior from Omaha, Neb., hit .458 (46 kills, 8 errors, 83 attempts) and averaged 5.18 points per set as the Mavericks posted a 2-1 record last week.She logged a career-best 25 kills and added four block assists to total 27 points while hitting .404 (25-6-47) in UNO's 3-2 home loss to then-No. 10 Truman State Saturday (Nov. 8). She scored six points (5 kills, 2 block assists) in the first set, and was a perfect 4-for-4 on the attack in the fifth set. Thommes hit .650 (14-1-20) and scored 16 points (14 kills, 4 block assists) with four digs in a 3-0 sweep of Missouri Western Friday (Nov. 7). In a 3-0 win at Northwest Missouri State Wednesday (Nov. 5), she scored 14 points (7 kills, 1 ace, 1 block solo, 10 block assists) and hit .375 (7-1-16).
The UNO volleyball team will finish the regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 at No. 14 Central Missouri.The Mavericks will then await word of their post-season fate as the pairings for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 16.
