Tennis Team Opens Play Saturday
Feb 1, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The Maverick tennis team will open its 2008 season Saturday, hosting Nebraska Wesleyan at 6 p.m. at the Hanscom Park Tennis Center.
UNO, which won its second-straight North Central Conference title last year, is coming off a 13-6 season. Coach Bill Nichols returns four starters and five letterwinners from last year's squad in his eighth season.
Key returnees include senior Sara Bredfeldt, NCC champion last year at No. 3 doubles; junior Rachel Faulk, second in the NCC at No. 1 singles in 2007; senior Kylie Roe, who teamed with Bredfeldt to win the No. 3 doubles and was second in No. 5 singles in the NCC; senior Katie Spahn, NCC champion at No. 2 doubles and third in No. 4 singles, and sophomore Kelsey Haas, who was 5-3 as a freshman last year.
That group is joined by redshirt freshman Jenna Nielsen and true freshmen Sarah Wheeland and Amanda Ciurej.
Nebraska Wesleyan recorded a 10-12 season last year. UNO posted an 8-0 decision over NWU in last year's match.
The Mavericks will play their first five matches at home, with Augustana the next assignment, on Feb. 8.
