Shires Signs Two High School Standouts
Apr 10, 2008 | Volleyball
University of Nebraska at Omaha head volleyball coach Rose Shires announced today the signing of two high school standouts, one from Nebraska and the other from California to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and national letters of intent to attend UNO in the fall of 2008.
The newest Mavericks are 5-11 rightside hitter Ann Ahrens (Kearney, Neb./Minden HS) and 5-11 setter Emily Myers (Modesto, Calif./Johansen HS).
Ann Ahrens
A three-sport athlete at Minden HS, Ahrens lettered in volleyball, basketball and track. She earned first team Class C-1 all-state honors from the Omaha World Herald in volleyball, while leading MHS to a runner-up finish at the 2007 Nebraska State Volleyball Tournament, where she was named to the all-tournament team. She also earned all-Southwest Conference and Kearney Hub all-area first team honors during her senior season.
Ahrens also helped lead the Whippets to a semifinal appearance at the 2008 Nebraska State Basketball Tournament, while averaging 11.8 points per game her senior season.
A two-time state qualifier at the Nebraska State Track & Field Championships, Ahrens placed third in the 4x400 meter relay and eighth in the discus as a sophomore in 2006. She finished second in the 4x400 meter relay and eighth in the discus as a junior.
Ahrens was selected to play in the 2008 Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star volleyball match in July.
"Ann is a highly athletic multi-sport athlete," said Shires. "We expect her to compete for immediate playing time on the right side. Ann is a fierce competitor who comes from an extremely successful high school program in every sport. She knows how to win."
Emily Myers
Myers, a three-time all-conference performer, led Johansen HS with 2.0 kills, 1.3 aces, 2.0 blocks and 8.2 assists per game during her senior campaign. She earned all-district honors from the Modesto Bee during her junior and senior seasons.
She is a member of the Delta Valley Volleyball Club under head coach Garren Allala.
Myers is the first-ever UNO volleyball recruit from the state of California.
"As soon as Emily landed in Omaha for her recruiting trip, I really felt like she was a Midwest person with a California address," said Shires. "She will be a great fit for our program. As a 5-11 setter, she can deliver a fast, accurate ball and she will give us an imposing block. I look for Emily to challenge for playing time immediately. She will complement our excellent corps of returning setters."
Ahrens and Myers complete the 2008 recruiting class, joining four early signees who signed letters of intent last November, including 6-2 middle blocker Chelsea Snyder (Omaha, Neb./Skutt Catholic HS), 5-7 defensive specialist Angie Reicks (Bellevue, Neb./West HS), 6-1 middle blocker Lizzy Mach (Wahoo, Neb./Bishop Neumann HS), and 5-7 defensive specialist Michaela Ziola (Aurora, Neb./Aurora HS).
The Mavericks made their fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA II Tournament in 2007, finishing with a 17-9 overall record.
