OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO men's basketball team got 26 points from #Michael Jenkins# and contributions from throughout the lineup to knock off the fifth-ranked Southwest Baptist Bearcats 88-84 on Wednesday night at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks held the Bearcats to just 37% shooting in the second half to pull off the upset and improve to 11-4 on the year and 5-3 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
UNO never trailed in the first half, twice building 12-point leads, the second time on a three-pointer by Jenkins with 9:57 remaining in the stanza. The Mavericks played much of the first half without #Justin Petersen# and #Dion Curry# who each had two fouls before the game was three minutes old.
Southwest showed its depth by clawing back into the game, tying it at 30 when Johnnie Harris hit a layup with 2:56 remaining in the half. But three-pointers from #Mitch Albers and Matt Newman# helped the Mavericks rebuild their lead. They had a 40-38 edge at halftime.
The Mavs stretched their lead early in the second half and had a seven-point advantage when #Aaron Terry# converted a layup with 16:28 to go. The Bearcats would again respond, tying the game at 56-all on a layup by Wendell Mardis with 12:56 remaining in the game.
UNO surrendered the lead for the first time with 6:56 to go when Nick Kovacevich hit the first of two free throws. Southwest would eventually take a four-point lead, but Newman would hit another three, igniting a 5-0 run that put the Mavs up 75-71.
The Bearcats had one final lead on a three-pointer from Brandon Clemons with 1:40 to go, but Mitch Albers hit a layup and Curry followed with a lay-up to make it 83-80 UNO. Jenkins supplied the final daggers with a three-pointer with 33 seconds to go and two free throws with 4 seconds remaining.
Jenkins was 7-for-12 from the floor including 3-for-6 from three-point range. He was a perfect 9-for-9 from the line. Mitch Albers had 19 points while Curry added 10. Off the bench, #Matt Akins# played 23 minutes and pulled down 8 rebounds. #Andrew Bridger# had 7 steals to go along with 9 points.
Matt Rogers led the Bearcats with 19 points while Brandon Clemons had 13. Southwest had 5 players in double figures.
The Mavericks will host another ranked team on Saturday, Jan. 17 when they welcome the #13 Missouri Southern State University Lions at 7 p.m.
