OMAHA, Neb. - For the second time in a week, the UNO men's basketball team knocked off a ranked team, beating 13th-ranked Missouri Southern 74-64 on Saturday night at Sapp Fieldhouse. #Michael Jenkins# had 27 points to lead all scorers as the Mavericks improved to 12-4 and 6-3 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
UNO beat fifth-ranked Southwest Baptist 88-84 on Wednesday night.
The Lions held a slight lead through most of the first half. A three-pointer from Mariun Price put Southern up 22-20 with 7:08 to go in the stanza.
From there, the Mavericks would go on a 10-0 run to seize the lead with 6 points coming from #Andrew Bridger# during that stretch. UNO led 38-28 at halftime.
The two teams traded baskets early in the second half as Jenkins and Bridger led the way. Jenkins would pick up 18 of his points in the second. But the Mavs would go cold for a stretch of nearly 4 minutes, and the Lions would narrow the gap to 3 points on a pair of free throws by Skyler Bowlin.
UNO responded with a run of its own, and the Lions were forced to foul late. Jenkins sealed it from the line, going 8-for-8 in the second half to secure the win.
Bridger had 19 points and 3 assists while #Mitch Albers# added 14. #Justin Petersen# led UNO with 9 rebounds.
Bowlin paced the Lions with 21 points, the only Missouri Southern player to finish in double digits. Vincent Ateba and Jason Adams each had 9 points. The Lions have lost three of their last four games.
The Mavericks return to the road on Wednesday, Jan. 21 to play the Pittsburg State University Gorillas at 7:30 p.m.
