Mavs Hit The Road This Week Sporting Four-Game Winning Streak
The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (9-4-0, 8-1-0 MIAA) will play six of its next seven matches on the road, starting with a pair this week. On Thursday, Oct. 15 the Mavericks will square off with the Missouri Western State Griffons (5-9-0, 3-7-0 MIAA) in St. Joseph, Mo., at 7 p.m. It will be UNO's second night match of the season. From there, UNO heads to Emporia, Kan., to take on the Emporia State Hornets (1-9-1, 1-7-1 MIAA) at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18. The Mavs, riding a four-game winning streak, are 1-3 on the road this season.
UNO Keeps Rolling With Two More Shutout Wins Last Week
The Mavericks improved their conference record to 8-1 last week with a pair of wins over Emporia State and Washburn on their home field. UNO is now 7-0 at home this season and is riding a 10-game home winning streak.
The Mavs stomped the Hornets on Oct. 8, 5-0. #Jerica Kuncl netted the game winner in the 18th minute. Nicole Baier ended her five-game drought without a goal by scoring a pair of them in the game. She added two assists in the game as well. Jessica Powers scored a goal and assisted on three of the goals in the game. Freshman midfielder Nicole Cunningham# scored her first career goal in the game.
Kuncl scored the game winner again on Oct. 11 against Washburn as the Mavs edged the Lady Blues, 1-0. Powers fed Kuncl the ball and she found the back of the net at 19:10 of the first half. UNO outshot WU 20-3 in the match. #Lauren Fox# picked up both wins in net for the Mavs.
The Series
The history between UNO and Missouri Western on the soccer field is brief. The Mavs have won all three matches and have shutout the Griffons twice. The two teams battled earlier this season in UNO's home opener and the Mavs won, 4-2. UNO has outscored MWSU 9-2 in the past three meetings.
UNO is 4-0-1 all-time against Emporia State and have won the last three matches. The Mavs have blanked the Hornets in four of the five meetings including a 5-0 rout last week at UNO Soccer Field.
Scouting The Opponents
MWSU: The Griffons enter Thursday's match with a 5-9-0 record and a 3-7-0 conference record. They are 1-3 in the month of October.
ESU: The Hornets are 1-9-1 overall and a 1-7-1 in the MIAA. ESU's only win of the year came against the Griffons on Sept. 17 with a 1-0 shutout over the Griffons. Before hosting UNO on Sunday, ESU will face Washburn on Thursday in Topeka, Kan., at 7 p.m.
The Coaches
Head coach #Don Klosterman# enters his 11th season at the helm of the Maverick women's soccer team. He has compiled a 179-43-7 (.797) overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to seven-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2008). In those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons (2002-2007), and led the team to a 2005 National Championship.
During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005). The St. Louis, Mo., native has compiled 10-straight winning seasons and has never won less than 13 matches in a season. Klosterman was ranked 16th in victories among all-time Division II coaches entering the 2009 fall season.
The Griffons are coached by Jeff Hansen who is in his fourth season at the helm of MWSU's soccer program. The Hornets are coached by Jim Schneiderhahn who is in his second year with the program. He has compiled a 5-25-2 overall record and is 2-21-1 in MIAA play.
What's On Tap?
The Mavericks will be on the road again next week for a pair of conference matches. On Thursday, Oct. 22 UNO heads to Topeka, Kan., to battle Washburn at 6 p.m. From there, the Mavs will head to Maryville, Mo., for a match against Northwest Missouri State. Kick off is slated for 11:30 a.m.
