PUEBLO, Colo. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha (2-0) baseball team opened the 2009 campaign with a doubleheader sweep of Colorado Christian University (3-2), 9-6 and 11-2 Saturday afternoon at Runyon Field.
#Josh Warren# went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the first game, while #Drew Schwab and Brian Goliber# each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in the finale to help lead the Mavericks to victory. Schwab also pitched three scoreless innings in the first game, striking out one batter.
UNO and CCU will continue its series tomorrow with an afternoon doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Game 1: Nebraska-Omaha 9, Colorado Christian 6
Through the first four innings of action the game remained scoreless as the Mavericks' #Chris Kessinger# (1-0) and Schwab combined to hold the Cougars to just three hits through four innings of work.
UNO struck first with a score in the second inning. After a #Jeremy Klein# single, the next batter, Matt Eikmeier, brought him home with a double to center to give the Mavs a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks took control of the game in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, scoring a total of eight runs. In the fifth, #Matt Meyer# hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Goliber who singled to begin the inning, while #Evan Porter recorded the other RBI in the inning with a two-out single that scored Travis Jacobi#.
With the bases loaded in the sixth, both Klein and Schwab scored on an error by Cougars' shortstop Chad Barnhill. In the seventh inning, the Mavs scored all four runs with two outs. With the bases loaded, Goliber hit a double that scored Klein and Schwab. Jacobi followed Goliber's double with a two-run single to center with Goliber and Eikmeier scoring.
CCU scored all of its runs in the final three innings. In the bottom half of the seventh inning, Matt Jones gave the Cougars' its first run with an RBI single to right field. In the eighth, a Brett Myatt RBI single to right made the score 9-2 heading into the ninth inning.
The Cougars managed to score four runs in the ninth off of Maverick pitcher #Brian Strawn# to trim UNO's lead to 9-6, but that's the closest CCU would get as Strawn got Myatt to ground out to second base with the tying on run on deck.

Game 2: Nebraska-Omaha 11, Colorado Christian 2
The UNO baseball team scored at least one run in the first four innings and added six in the seventh inning en route to a 11-2 win to sweep the afternoon series.
#Kyle Dahman#(1-0), #Wes Simmons and Adam Versendal# pitched a combined six innings of scoreless ball and holding the Cougars to seven hits with four strike outs.
Schwab put the Mavericks on top in the first with a two-out double scoring Hansen who walked to begin the inning. Klein followed Schwab's double with a RBI single to left center to make it 2-0.
Meyer added to UNO's lead in the second with a RBI single that sent Goliber home. Schwab recorded his second RBI of the game with a single to right field in the top half of the third inning.
In the fourth inning, Hansen kept the momentum going scoring Warren who tripled earlier in the inning.
The Mavericks put the game out of reach scoring six runs in the seventh inning. Porter, Klein, #Brady Hohl# and Jacobi each recorded an RBI, while Warren tallied two.
The Cougars scored its only two runs in the seventh with a single by Bud Wilborn and fielder's choice Joey Younkerman.
