Maverick Qualifiers Ready For Finals at MIAA Track

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The UNO indoor track and field team placed four sprinters in the finals of the 200 meter dash, highlighting the second day of competition at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association indoor track and field championships at the University of Central Missouri. Saturday's events were dominated by qualifying heats in the shorter distances, an area where the Mavericks excel.
In total, UNO had 13 qualifiers for the finals, more than any school.
The Mavericks will have four sprinters vying for first in the 200 meter dash. Senior #Pinar Saka# ran the top qualifying time of 24.85. UNO's #Maja Mihalinec# was third at 25.60, #Shannon Moore fourth at 25.65 and Kayla Koepke# fifth at 25.65.
Saka qualified for the finals in three other events. She ran the top qualifying time in the 400 meter dash at 57.49 and in the 600 yard dash at 1:23.87.She also will be seeded second in the 60 meter dash after a time of 7.73 in the prelims.
Mihalinec will be the top seed in the 60 after a preliminary time of 7.70.
#Anja Puc# is seeded third in the 400 after she ran a time of 58.11. She'll also be in the eighth position in the 800 follwing a time of 2:24.92. Her time was less than a tenth of a second slower than teammate #Lisa Tesarek# who is seeded seveth in the event at 2:24.84.
Koepke will join Saka and Puc in the 400 finals after running a prelim time of 58.19, good for the fourth seed.
#Jolene Smith# is seeded fifth in the 600 with a time of 1:29.56.
The Mavericks earned 2.5 points in the finals of two events today. #Rasheema Pitt# tied with Truman State's Katrina Biermann for sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, seven and one half inches.
UNO also took fifth place in the distance medley. The team of #Mary Margaret Nelson#, Tesarek, Smith and Kelly Esch finished in a time of 13:01.99.
The Mavericks sit in ninth place with six and one half points with the finals of their strongest events to come.
The third and final day of the meet kicks off on Sunday morning with the women's long jump.
