
Mavericks Sweep Doubleheader from Missouri Souther

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO baseball team won both ends of a home-opening doubleheader, beating Missouri Southern 5-3 and 6-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks evened their record in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association at 3-3. They are now 13-8 overall.
The games were played at Westside High School because of unplayable field conditions at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
Game 1
#Chris Kessinger# allowed just two runs in six and two-thirds innings as the Mavericks beat the Lions in the first game, 5-3. It was Missouri Southern's first MIAA loss of the season.
UNO took the lead on a two-run double by #Brian Goliber# in the bottom of the second. Matt Eikmeier and Drew Schwab both scored.
The Mavericks held a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning when they added two more. #Andrew Hansen knocked in Goliber and Brian Strawn# with a two-out single.
The Lions got two back in the top of the seventh inning before #Brandon Dahl# closed the game by inducing MSSU's Trent Owens to foul out.
Game 2
The Mavericks scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, beating the Lions 6-2 in the nightcap.
UNO led 1-0 early in the first when #Drew Schwab# clouted a three-run home run off Missouri Southern starter Garrett Groom. It was his team-leading sixth home run of the year.
#Ben Percival# started well on the mound for the Mavericks, striking out five of the first six batters he faced. He went eight innings, allowing only two runs on six hits and three walks. He improved to 5-0 on the season.
#Travis Jacobi# added a solo home run in the second inning, and #Evan Porter# had an RBI double in the fifth to account for UNO's other runs.
The two teams finish the weekend series back at Westside on Sunday morning with another doubleheader beginning at 9 a.m.
