OMAHA, Neb. - #Ben Percival# had a new team season-high for strikeouts to lead the UNO baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at the Ball Park at Boys Town on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks won the first game 3-2 before stopping the Gorillas 4-1 to improve to 22-9 overall and 12-4 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
The two teams will square off in another doubleheader on Sunday at Boys Town beginning at 12 noon.
Game 1
#Chris Kessinger# worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning as the Maveircks escaped the opener, 3-2.
Kessinger had a 3-0 lead in the last frame when the Gorillas scored two runs and had two men on base. But he fanned Luke McKown to end the threat and improve to 4-2 on the season. He allowed five hits and just one earned run while striking out six.
The Mavs had a 2-0 lead after one inning when #Andrew Hansen tripled and was brought home on another triple by Brett Koehn#.
UNO picked up the winning run in the bottom of the fourth when #Brian Strawn hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Drew Schwab#. Schwab and Hansen finished the game 2-for-3.
Game 2
Percival set the team mark for strikeouts with 13 while pitching his third complete game of the season. He earned the mark by fanning Pittsburg State's Tim Brown and Jason Murphy in the top of the ninth.
The Mavericks got a single run in the second on a sacrifice fly from #Travis Jacobi# and another in the third on a double by Schwab that scored Hansen.
The Gorillas got one back in the top of the fifth on a home run into a stiff wind in left by Omaha native Ben Ahrens. But UNO picked up a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Hansen and an RBI single by #Evan Porter# off reliever Anthony Martinez. Porter finished the game 3-for-4.
Percival improved to 7-0 on the season. He allowed just one run on three hits and recorded a strike out in all but two innings.
