
Mavericks Drop MIAA Opener to Emporia State, 7-5

EMPORIA, Kan. – The UNO baseball team opened its first season in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association with a 7-5 loss to the Emporia State University Hornets on Friday afternoon at Glennen Field. #Drew Schwab# went 2-for-3 and knocked in four runs for the Mavericks who fall to 10-6 on the season and 0-1 in MIAA play.
#Andrew Hansen# went 2-for-4 and scored a run for UNO. On the hill, #Chris Kessinger# went six innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk. He took the loss and is now 1-2 on the year.
The Hornets had a 2-0 lead after the first inning on a two-run home run by Kenny Burkhead.
In the top of the fourth inning and trailing 3-1 Emporia State, the Mavericks took the lead. #Brian Strawn# got hit by a pitch, and #Jeremy Klein# singled. That set the table for Schwab who cranked a home run, his second of the year.
The Hornets retook the lead in the bottom of the inning with a pair of unearned runs. After one Maverick throwing error, ESU scored on another and then on a double by Andy Cotton. The Hornets never trailed again, adding single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
The two teams square off again on Saturday with a double-header beginning at 12 p.m.
