OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO baseball team turned back the Missouri Western Griffons, 6-4 and 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The Mavericks have now won ten straight games and 15 of their last 16 to improve to 26-9 and 16-4 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Their lone loss in that string was to Missouri Western back on March 18.
The Mavericks now hit the road for a four-game series with Truman State on Friday and Saturday. The games have been moved up one day because of the threat of bad weather.
Game 1
The Mavericks built a five-run lead and then had to hang on to win 6-4 in the first game of the doubleheader.
With the game tied at one in the bottom of the fourth, the Mavs got a sacrifice fly from #Brian Goliber to score Drew Schawb and a two-run single to left field from Jeremy Klein# to make it 4-1.
UNO got two more in the bottom of the fifth. First, Schwab scored on a sac fly from #Brian Strawn# and later, #Mat Eikmeier# scored on a wild pitch to put the Mavs up 6-1.
The Griffons battled back with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth from Cody Tipton to make it 6-3. Western got one more in the seventh on a single by Drew Mannen but stranded two men when UNO's #Brandon Dahl# got Clint Jeffers to strike out swinging to end the game.
Schwab started the game for the Mavs, going three innings and allowing one run on two hits. #Tom Schmidt# picked up the win in relief. He improved to 4-1 after allowing two runs on three hits. He also struck out three and walked one.
Game 2
The Mavericks used a three-run eighth inning to come back from a two-run deficit to keep the streak alive in the nightcap. Goliber's triple to left center cleared the bases helping the Mavericks overcome a 4-2 deficit. Goliber showed good timing as it was his only hit in three at bats in the game.
The Griffons grabbed the first lead during a two-run third inning. The Mavs countered with one in the bottom of the inning when #Andrew Hansen hit a sacrifice fly to knock in Travis Jacobi#.
UNO tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Schwab doubled in #Brett Koehn#.
The Griffons retook the lead in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly and a single by Bill Waldman.
The Mavericks used five pitchers during the nine inning affair. #Justin Bruns# picked up the win in two-thirds of an inning of work. #Mark Johnson# came on in the ninth inning to get the save, his second of the year.
