Mavericks Drop Two To Fort Hays State

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Fort Hays State, losing 11-4 and 10-6 on Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The losses dropped the Mavericks to 32-13 on the season and 22-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
It was the first time the Mavericks had lost back-to-back MIAA games since losing two at Emporia State on March 7 and 8.
UNO and Fort Hays State will complete the four-game series with another doubleheader on Monday, April 20 at 12:00 p.m. at Boys Town.
Game One
The Tigers scored ten runs over the final two innings to erase a three-run deficit and beat the Mavericks 11-4 in the seven-inning opening game. Fort Hays State's Greg Bieker went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Tyler Robbins had four hits.
Fort Hays State had a 1-0 lead after two innings, but UNO took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. #Andrew Hansen# knocked in one run with a sacrifice fly, and #Evan Porter# had a two-run single to key the attack.
The Mavericks added another run in the fourth to go up 4-1 before the Tigers battled back in the sixth inning, taking advantage of two UNO errors. They scored four runs on just two hits to go up 5-4.
Fort Hays State then put the game out of reach with six runs in the top of the seventh inning.
#Chris Kessinger# took the loss for UNO on the mound and is now 5-4 on the year. He went five and two-thirds innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits. He struck out nine and walked three. #Brandon Dahl and Wes Simmons# allowed four and two runs respectively in relief.
Game Two
The Tigers got off to a strong start and never looked back, beating the Mavericks 10-6 in the finale. Porter and #Matt Meyer# were both 3-for-4 for UNO in the losing effort.
Fort Hays State led 1-0 after a half an inning, but the Mavericks scored four in the bottom of the first. #Brett Koehn# drove in two runs with a single through the left side. #Drew Schwab# followed later with an RBI single, and #Mat Eikmeier# had a sacrifice fly to score Koehn, giving the Mavs a 4-1 lead.
The Tigers got all four runs back in the top of the second. Brennan Peterson plated the first run with a fielder's choice. Robbins followed with a two-RBI single, and Greg Crowe had another RBI single to give Fort Hays State a 5-4 lead.
The visitors tacked on three more in the fifth and two in the eighth to go up 10-4.
UNO mounted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth when #Jeremy Klein# tripled to drive in Meyer who had singled. Klein then scored on a single by Porter. But Fort Hays State closer Matt Atkinson struck out #Josh Warren# with two men on to end the game.
Pitcher #Ben Percival# suffered his first loss of the year for UNO, falling to 9-1. He allowed eight runs, seven earned, on ten hits. He struck out four and walked three over seven innings of work. #Justin Bruns# allowed the other two runs in one-third of an inning of relief.
