Mavericks Bounce Back To Grab Doubleheader From Ti

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team turned on the offense, cranking out 22 runs to sweep the Fort Hays State Tigers 6-2 and 16-6 in doubleheader action at The Ballpark at Boys Town on Monday afternoon. One day after being swept in the first two games of the series, the Mavericks rebounded to improve their record to 34-13 and 24-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
UNO returns to action on Friday, April 24 with the first of four games at Central Missouri.
Game One
#Drew Schwab# went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in to lead UNO in the first game, 6-2. The Mavericks scored two runs in each of their last three innings to win their first game of the four-game series.
UNO opened the scoring in the fourth when #Brett Koehn# doubled and Schwab followed with a home run to right field to make it 2-0.
The Tigers responded with two in the top of the fifth, but the Mavericks got the runs back in the bottom of the inning. The Mavs loaded the bases and then pushed across a run when Koehn was hit by a pitch. Schwab then singled to left field, plating #Jeremy Klein# to boost UNO's lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, #Andrew Hansen# drove in another run with a sacrifice fly, and #Evan Porter singled in Matt Meyer# with the final run.
#Joe Holtmeyer# earned the win to improve to 6-2. He pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out nine and walked five.
Game Two
The Mavericks scored 15 runs by the end of the third inning including nine in the third frame to turn the nightcap of the doubleheader into a rout, 16-6. The game was called after seven innings because of the run rule.
#Mat Eikmeier# was 4-for-5 with four RBI while Hansen went 4-for-4 with three runs driven in.
Already leading 6-3 after two and a half innings, the Mavericks sent 14 men to the plate in the nine-run third. #Brian Goliber# led off the inning with a home run.
The final eight runs in the inning all came with two outs. Schwab picked up an RBI on a bases loaded walk. Eikmeier followed with a two-run single to right. #Brian Strawn#, Meyer and Klein all followed with RBI singles and Hansen capped the scoring with a two-run double to right center. In all, Fort Hays State used three pitchers in the inning.
UNO added their final run on a single by Strawn in the bottom of the sixth. The run proved important because the Tigers battled back with three runs in the top of the seventh before Chase Schippers was erased at second on a fielder's choice to end the game.
#Kyle Dahman# worked five innings to pick up the win and improve to 6-0. He allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three and walking three. #Tom Schmidt and Mark Johnson# each worked an inning of relief.
