Mules Keep Mavericks In Check To Win Doubleheader

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The UNO baseball team scored just one run over its final two games at Central Missouri, losing 5-0 and 4-1 to the Mules on Saturday afternoon at Crane Stadium. After winning the first game of the four-game series, the Mavericks dropped the final three to dip to 35-16 overall and 25-11 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The three straight losses are the most for UNO this season.
The Mavericks return to action with a single non-conference game at Rockhurst University on Wednesday, April 29 at 3 p.m.
Game 1
UNO was shutout for the first time this season, losing 5-0 to the Mules in the opener. The Mavericks managed only three hits and committed four errors.
The Mules scored three runs in the first inning and single runs in the second and third. John Oropeza went 3-for-3 while Jon Wegener was 2-for-3, and Chance Tuttle was 2-for-4. Mitch Stubenhofer pitched all seven innings, striking out five and walking one, to earn the win.
#Joe Holtmeyer# took the loss for the Mavericks. He lasted just two and a third innings and allowed five runs, although none earned, on six hits. He struck out one and walked two. #Tom Schmidt# worked three and two thirds innings in relief, allowing three hits while striking out two.
Game 2
The Mules jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings and never gave the Mavs much hope to take the second game, 4-1. Reliever Chris Matlock nailed down the win with two and two-thirds innings of strong pitching. He allowed just three hits and struck out four to pick up his eleventh save of the year.
Both #Brett Koehn and Travis Jacobi# went 2-for-3, the only UNO players to collect multiple hits.
Central Missouri led 3-0 after two. Cory Deedrick knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Tuttle had a two-run home run to left field off UNO starter #Kyle Dahman# to account for the runs. Dahman went seven and two-thirds innings, allowing ten hits and four runs while striking out four and walking three.
The Mavericks got their run in the top of the sixth when #Drew Schwab# singled to left to score Jacobi who had walked to lead off the inning. UNO could have had more but left two runners on base when #Brian Strawn# lined out to center field to end the inning.
UNO had chances in the final three innings but left a total of six men stranded including two in the ninth. The Mules added their final run in the bottom of the eighth.
Danny Potje earned the win for Central Missouri. He worked five and two-thirds innings and allowed just one run on four hits.
