Mavs Split Doubleheader with Washburn

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team hosted senior day festivities while splitting a doubleheader with Washburn on Saturday, winning the first game 7-5 and losing the second 6-5. The series will play a crucial role in seeding for NCAA regional playoff positions. The Mavericks are now 36-17 on the season and 26-12 in the MIAA.
The series will wrap up on Sunday when the two teams meet again for another doubleheader at 12 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
Game 1
All of the Mavs' runs came in the first four innings of the game, as they won 7-5. #Evan Porter# was 2-for-2 in the game with two runs, one RBI, and one walk, while #Travis Jacobi# went 2-for-3 driving in two runs.
UNO started off the scoring in the bottom of the first when Porter hit a solo shot to center field. Jacobi later singled to drive home #Drew Schwab# for the second run of the inning.
The Mavs got another run in the bottom of the second when #Brian Goliber scored on a sac fly by Brett Koehn#. UNO got four more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Koehn hit a three-run home run. The Mavericks final run came on a two-out triple by Jacobi to bring home #Brian Strawn#.
#Chris Kessinger# notched his seventh win on the season, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out 11. Kessinger held off a late surge by Washburn in the fifth and sixth innings to record his fourth complete game of the season.
Game 2
UNO and Washburn matched each other run-for-run in the second game with the Ichabods earning the deciding run, 6-5. Schwab had two hits and one RBI in the contest while Porter continued his great day going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one home run.
The Mavericks started the scoring in the bottom of the first when Schwab singled to left to score Porter.
The Ichabods took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, driving in four runs on four consecutive hits. UNO came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie it up thanks to Porter's second home run of the day.
Washburn grabbed the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning when Calvin Iverson singled through the left side of the infield platting Brian Clark. The Ichabods and Mavs would each add another run in the eighth inning with Washburn holding on for the victory.
#Ben Percival# took the loss for the UNO. He allowed six runs on ten hits in 7.2 innings of work. He walked just two batters in the contest while recording eight strike-outs. He is now 9-3 on the year.
