Mavs Finish Regular Season with a Victory at Home

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team wrapped up its regular season on Sunday by splitting a doubleheader with Washburn. The Mavericks lost the first game by a score of 14-4 but snatched a bit of revenge in game 2 with an 11-7 victory. The Mavericks finish the regular season with a record of 37-18 overall and 27-13 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
UNO will return to action on Friday, May 8 at 6 p.m. when it takes on number one seed Emporia State in the opening round of the MIAA tournament.
Game 1
Washburn erupted for 14 runs on 14 hits to defeat UNO by a final score of 14-4. The Mavericks managed to score four runs on nine hits in the game.
The Ichabods scored half their runs in the top of the second, getting another six in the fourth and one in the fifth. Thomas Holiday went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, one walk and two runs. Luis Lopez was 1-for-2 with three RBIs while Camerorc Kasel had two hits and two RBIs.
#Joe Holtmeyer# took the loss for the Mavericks, moving his record to 6-4. He pitched just 1.1 innings, allowing five hits and seven runs. #Paul Hansen# came in to pitch two innings in relief and allowed six runs on five hits. #Michael McClaren# relieved Hansen, giving up one run on three hits, and #Mark Johnson# closed out the game with two strikeouts.
Game 2
UNO struck back in the second game scoring 11 runs on 14 hits to get the victory by a score of 11-7. #Evan Porter# had three hits, three runs and five RBIs, four coming on a grand-slam home run in the fifth inning to tie him with Chris Weimer for UNOs career home run record.
Washburn got the scoring started in the top of the second when Lopez scored following a walk by Wes Joy.
The Mavericks took the lead in the bottom of the third for good when they scored two runs. #Andrew Hansen# scored on a single to left by Porter. #Travis Jacobi# hit into a fielder's choice later in the inning bringing home Porter on the play.
The Mavs put eight runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 10-1 lead. #Mat Eikmeier# got the scoring started by singling to left center, plating Porter and #Drew Schwab#. Jacobi scored on a sac fly to center by catcher #Brian Goliber#. Following an error which scored Eikmeier and two walks, Porter would come up to bat and hit a grand-slam to right field. UNO would get one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
#Kyle Dahman# recorded his seventh win of the season. He pitched 5.1 innings allowing just three hits and one run. #Tom Schmidt#, #Andrew Martinez#, and #Brian Strawn# pitched a combined 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits and six runs to close out the win for the Mavericks.
