Mavericks Get By Hornets In MIAA Baseball First Ro

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – #Evan Porter and Travis Jacobi# each had three hits and two runs batted in to power the UNO baseball team to a 6-3 win over the Emporia State University Hornets in first round action from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Playoffs. The Mavericks advance to the winner's bracket game on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. to take on Missouri Southern at Community America Ballpark.
The Mavericks are now 38-18 on the season while Emporia State falls to 42-11.
#Drew Schwab# also had three hits, and #Chris Kessinger# earned the win with a complete game nine-hitter.
UNO built a 6-0 lead on the eighth-ranked Hornets through five and a half innings. #Brian Goliber# laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Jacobi in the second inning to make it 1-0.
#Andrew Hansen# led off the third inning with a triple and came home on a ground out by Porter to start the third. Schwab and Jacobi then hit back-to-back doubles to tack on another run and make it 3-0 UNO.
The Mavs got two more in the fifth when Porter led off with a double and later scored on a single by #Brett Koehn#. Koehn would come home on a single by Jacobi to boost the lead to 5-0.
After adding a run in the top of the sixth, the Mavericks watched Emporia State get back two runs in the bottom of the inning. Kellen Lane drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice plated Kenny Burkhead to make it 6-2.
The Hornets, the tournament's top seed, would get another run in the seventh but would never fully solve Kessinger. The senior left two runners stranded in the ninth when he got Burkhead on an appealed strike three to end the game.
Kessinger finished with eight strikeouts and just three walks while throwing 127 pitches. He is now 8-4 on the season.
