Mavs Look To Tame SBU and NWMSU Bearcats This Week

OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (5-4-0, 4-1-0 MIAA) will play the first game of its four-game homestand Thursday, Oct. 1 when the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (5-2-1, 3-2 MIAA) come to town. The two teams will square off at 4 p.m. at UNO Soccer Field. On Saturday, Oct. 3, the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats (7-2-0, 3-2-0 MIAA) will visit for a 1 p.m. match.
Bulldogs Snap Mavericks Streak
UNO dropped its first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association match of the season last weekend against the Truman State Bulldogs. The Mavericks, who took a four-game winning streak with them to Kirksville, were shut out, 1-0 at the Truman Soccer Pitch. It was the second time this season that UNO has been shutout.
After a scoreless first half, TSU's Olivia Hayes found the back of the net just 46 seconds into the second half for the game winner. The Bulldog defense limited the Mavericks to seven shots, their second lowest total of the season. It was Truman's fourth-straight shutout. Sophomore midfielder Melanie Petersen led UNO with three shots, two of them on goal. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Fox increased her streak of scoreless minutes to 272:27 before giving up the goal to Hayes.
The Series
Thursday's match with Southwest Baptist will be the sixth meeting between the two schools. The Mavericks have the upper hand with a 4-0-1 all-time record against SBU. Last season UNO blanked SBU 1-0 in both matches. Of the five meetings, two of them have gone to overtime, including UNO's last victory over the Bearcats on Nov. 6, 2008 at the UNO Soccer Field, 1-0.
It will mark the eighth meeting between UNO and NWMSU when the two teams collide on Saturday. The Mavs own a 6-1-0 advantage in the series. UNO won five in a row against NWMSU until the Bearcats edged the Mavs 2-1 on Oct. 4 last season. UNO has outscored NWMSU 26-4 in the series and has shutout the Bearcats on four occasions.
Scouting The Opponents
SBU: Southwest Baptist enters Thursday's game with a 5-2-1 overall record. The Bearcats are tied for third place in the MIAA with a 3-2 record.
MWMSU: Northwest Missouri's 7-2 overall record is tops in the MIAA. But its 3-2 conference record has it tied for third place entering Saturday's match.
The Coaches
Head coach Don Klosterman enters his 11th season at the helm of the Maverick women's soccer team. He has compiled a 175-43-7 (.793) overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to seven-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2008). In those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons (2002-2007), and led the team to a 2005 National Championship.
During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005). The St. Louis, Mo., native has compiled 10-straight winning seasons and has never won less than 13 matches in a season. Klosterman was ranked 16th in victories among all-time Division II coaches entering the 2009 fall season.
SBU is led by first-year head coach Rob Podeyn. He is the eighth head coach in school history. Podeyn has guided SBU to a 5-2-1 overall record this season. NWMSU is coached by Tracy Hoza who enters her seventh season. She is the second head coach in the history of the Bearcat soccer program. Hoza has compiled a 44-67-13 overall record.
