23rd-ranked Nebraska-Omaha will play one more match on the road, Wednesday at 7 p.m. against No. 9 Nebraska-Kearney, before returning home to host the seven-team UNO Volleyball Classic, Friday and Saturday at Sapp Fieldhouse. Friday UNO will take on Southern Indiana at 12:15 p.m. and Drury at 7 p.m. On Saturday the Mavericks (6-2) will play Missouri S&T at 11:45 a.m. and Angelo State at 6:30 p.m.
The matches will be the final non-conference contests of the season for UNO before MIAA action begins September 16 at Missouri Southern.
UNO is returning from a 2-2 trip to the Florida Southern Classic. The Mavericks played three top-15 opponents and with the UNK match on Wednesday, four of their last five opponents will have been against top-15 opponents.
Mavericks Go 2-2 Against Tough FSC Classic Field
The Mavericks went 2-2 last weekend at the Florida Southern Classic to move their record to 6-2. They fell twice on Friday by 3-1 scores to both then-No. 11 Minnesota Duluth and then-No. 14 Florida Southern and on Saturday they won two matches by 3-1 scores against Bemidji State and then-sixth-ranked Grand Valley State.
The losses Friday were the first of the year after the Mavs went 4-0 in their own UNO Volleyball Showcase in the opening weekend. Senior middle blocker Ellen Thommes averaged 3.12 kills a set and hit .436 during the four matches while setter Emily Myers helped lead the UNO offense to a .257 attack percentage as she averaged 10.12 assists per set.
Mavericks Climb Into Top 25 Poll
The Mavericks earned their first spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top 25 poll with a No. 23 ranking in Monday's poll. Nebraska-Omaha started the year 4-0 before going 2-2 last weekend. They beat then-No. 6 Grand Valley State (now 18th) while falling to two other top-10 opponents.
UNO is one of five MIAA teams in the top 25 and overall, eight of UNO's 2009 opponents are in the ranking.
Shires 7 Wins From 400 in 20th Season at UNO
UNO head coach Rose Shires is in her 20th season at UNO with a 393-217 record with the Mavericks. She needs just seven more wins to give her 400. Shires is first at UNO in terms of total wins and second with a .644 winning percentage.
Shires coached UNO to a national championship in 1996 and she boasts three conference championships and 10 trips to the NCAA tournament since taking over the program in 1990.
Thommes Nears 1,000 Kills Club Membership
Senior middle blocker Ellen Thommes begins the third week of her senior season just 22 kills away from becoming UNO's 17th member of the 1,000 kill club. She led the team with 353 last year and with 50 last weekend in the UNO Showcase, she has 978 in her career.
Carlie Christensen was the last Maverick to join the 1,000 kill club. She had 1,214 kills while playing from 2004-07.
With 22 block assists this year, Thommes moved to ninth in career block assists at UNO, now with 311.
Thommes Repeats as Nebraska Player of the Week
Senior middle blocker Ellen Thommes was named the Nebraska NCAA Division II volleyball player of the week for the second straight week. Averaging 3.12 kills, Thommes reached double figure kill totals in all four matches.
Another Ranked Opponent Stands in UNO's Way
The Mavericks will face ninth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney (8-1) on Wednesday before facing four unranked teams in the UNO Classic Friday and Saturday. Friday they face 5-3 Southern Indiana and 6-1 Drury. On Saturday they face Missouri S&T (2-7) and Angelo State (6-1).
