Mavericks Host Truman, Visit Washburn This Week

This Week
The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (5-5-1, 5-3-1 MIAA) plays two games this week, beginning with a 4 p.m. conference matchup against Truman on Thursday, Oct. 14 at UNO Soccer Field. After hosting TSU, the Mavericks travel to Topeka, Kan. on Saturday, Oct. 16 to take on Washburn at 6 p.m.
Mavericks Holding Ground in Conference Play
Trailing only Central Missouri and Truman State in the standings, UNO reeled off three consecutive wins before a 2-1 double overtime loss at Missouri Western on Oct. 9. The Mavericks are currently ranked No. 3 in the MIAA standings behind Central Missouri and Truman.
The Series
UNO owns a 12-7 all-time record against Truman. The two teams split the series last season with each school winning on its home field. The Mavs lost to the Bulldogs earlier this season, 1-0 in Kirksville, Mo. on Sept.11. Before this year, the last meeting between the two came on Nov. 13, 2009 in the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament when the Bulldogs knocked the Mavericks out of post-season play with a 1-0 victory in Canyon, Texas.
In week five, UNO downed Washburn 4-0 at home to earn the Mavericks' their second win of the season. Now on the road, UNO will face a WU team that is that is 3-5-3 overall and 3-4-2 in MIAA action. The Mavericks have outscored the Lady Blues, 13-6, in the five previous matchups and are 3-2-0 all-time versus WU since joining the MIAA.
Scouting The Bulldogs and Lady Blues
The Bulldogs are coming off a 1-1 tie against Northwest Missouri State on Oct. 9. After dropping their season opener against Midwestern State 3-2, they have gone 5-1-4 to move into second place in the MIAA standings. Sophomore forward Olivia Hayes leads the Bulldogs with four goals scored and nine points.
The Lady Blues are off to a 3-5-3 start overall, and are 3-4-2 in MIAA play. Washburn has lost two of its last four games overall and is currently ranked No. 6 in the MIAA. As a team, they have been outscored 17-9 overall this season.
The Coaches
Head coach Don Klosterman is in his 12th season at the helm of the Maverick soccer team. He has compiled a 188-50-10 overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2009).
Truman is coached by Mike Cannon who enters his 18th season as the Bulldogs women's soccer coach. With a career record of 232-81-30, Cannon is the winningest coach in Truman women's soccer history and was ranked eighth in victories among all-time Division II coaches entering the 2010 fall season.
Eighth-year head coach Tim Collins has led the Lady Blues to two NCAA regional tournament appearances in the last three seasons and an MIAA regular season title in the program's fourth season. He led the team to an 11-8-1 record in 2009 and an 8-7-1 record in MIAA play.
Horvatic and Renshaw Leading the Way
Junior Hilary Horvatic has stepped up as the scoring leader for the Mavericks. Horvatic has compiled a team-leading four goals and is tied for second with three assists. She has scored three goals in the last two games. Junior midfielder Haley Renshaw is now the team leader in assists with four and has dished out three in the last three games.
Next Up for the Mavericks
The Mavericks will stay on the road, facing Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. on Oct. 21 at 7p.m. UNO fell to UCM, 3-2, on Sept. 19 at UNO Soccer Field. UNO will be back home on Oct. 23 for a rematch against Southwest Baptist at UNO Soccer Field at 12 noon. It also will be Senior Day for the Mavericks as they recognize seniors #Lauren Fox and Becky Heffling#.
