Mavs Face MIAA No. 1 Central Missouri on Thursday

OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (6-6-1, 6-4-1 MIAA) plays two games this week, beginning with a 7 p.m. conference matchup at MIAA No.1 Central Missouri on Thursday, Oct. 21.
Following the road match, the Mavericks will return home on Saturday, Oct. 23 to host Southwest Baptist at UNO Soccer Field at 12 p.m. It will be Senior Day as the Mavericks recognize their two seniors, goalkeeper #Lauren Fox and midfielder Becky Heffling#.
Mavericks Holding Ground in Conference Play
UNO has split its last four games, winning at Washburn and at home against Emporia State while losing on the road in overtime at Missouri Western and at home to Truman. The Mavericks are currently ranked No. 3 in the MIAA standings behind Central Missouri and Truman.
The Series
Thursday's game marks the 14th meeting between UNO and UCM. The Mavs own a 10-3 all-time record against the Jennies. UCM's third-ever win over UNO came earlier this season on Sept. 19 at UNO Soccer Field when the Jennies downed the Mavericks 3-2. UNO has outscored UCM 37-10 in the past 13 meetings.
The Mavericks have a 5-0-3 series advantage against Southwest Baptist. UNO has won or tied in all seven meetings between the two schools. Earlier this season, the two teams battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw in Bolivar, Mo. on Sept. 23.
Scouting The Jennies and Bearcats
The Jennies currently rank No. 2 in latest NSCAA/HendrickCars.com D-II National Poll, which was released on Oct. 19. Dominating the MIAA, UCM has reeled off 12 straight wins including 10 against MIAA opponents. Sophomore midfielder Kayla Shain has six goals and four assists for a total of 16 points to lead the team, and freshman forward Carly Stanley and junior Alyssa Rhodes are tied for second with five goals apiece.
The Bearcats currently hold a 6-5-2 overall record and a 5-4-2 mark in MIAA action. Just behind the Mavericks in the MIAA standings, SBU is currently ranked fourth in the MIAA with 17 points.
After dropping two straight games, the Bearcats got back on track last week with a 2-0 shutout at home against Missouri Western on Oct. 16.
The Coaches
Head coach Don Klosterman is in his 12th season at the helm of the Maverick soccer team. He has compiled a 189-51-10 overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2009).
Central Missouri is led by Lewis Theobald who enters his fourth season as head coach. Last season, he guided the Jennies to a 13-5-2 mark and 12-3-1 in the MIAA. Last year, his team missed the NCAA post season for the first time in four years.
Southwest Baptist is led by first year head coach Rob Podeyn. Before coming to SBU, he took NAIA Northwood from a No. 212 national ranking and 3-12 conference record to a No. 34 national rank and two consecutive conference championships.
Horvatic and Renshaw Leading the Way
Junior Hilary Horvatic has emerged as the team leader for the Mavericks. Horvatic has compiled a team-leading five goals and is tied for second with three assists. She has blasted four goals in the last four games to lead all scorers.
Junior midfielder #Hayley Renshaw# remains the team leader in assists with four and has dished out three in the last five games.
Sophomore defender #Danielle Archuleta# has come on strong as of late, scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes of last week's game at Washburn.
Next Up for the Mavericks
The Mavericks will be back home for the final time this season on Thursday, Oct. 28 to face off with Missouri Southern at 3 p.m. They will then be back on the road to face Northwest Missouri State on Oct. 30 at 11:30 a.m.
UNO will ends its regular season play at Emporia State on Nov. 6 in a 1 p.m. matchup against the Hornets.
