Mavericks Take 76-46 Win Over York College

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season against York College on Friday night, defeating the Panthers 76-46 at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 1-0 (0-0 MIAA) on the year, while York drops to 0-1.
Sophomore guard Jamie Nash led Nebraska-Omaha with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, along with a perfect 5-for-5 night from the free throw line. Nash added a career-high eight steals with six rebounds and an assist.
Sophomore guards Sara Reeves and Jessica Zaruba joined Nash in double figures. Reeves notched 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting, while adding a team-leading eight boards, four steals and two assists, and Zaruba contributed 11 points on a 5-for-7 night from the floor.
Defensively, sophomore guard Paige Frauendorfer and junior forward Heather Pohl each pulled down seven rebounds and chipped in nine points and a block apiece, with Frauendorfer swiping four steals and adding two assists. True freshman guard ¬¬¬Amanda Woodring also had a team-high three blocks.
Freshmen Woodring, Jordan Spencer and Stacia Gebers all made their collegiate debuts for the Mavericks, with Gebers totaling eight points off the bench, including a perfect 3-for-3 showing at the line.
UNO won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Panthers 48-41. The Mavs also capitalized on York's 36 turnovers to score 32 points, while also dominating inside, putting up 38 points in the paint to the Panthers' 20.
Nash hit the first shot of the game, a layup to go up 2-0. The Panthers then surprised Nebraska-Omaha with a 17-5 run to take a 10-point advantage, capped by a 3-pointer by Sara Lincoln. The Mavs then used their own 13-3 scoring run to retake the lead, with Pohl dropping in her first shot in the paint to make it 21-20. UNO never forfeited its edge, finishing the half at 37-27.l
In the second stanza, Gebers scored all eight of her points to lead the way, while the Maverick defense held York to 23 percent shooting from the field. Nebraska-Omaha took its biggest margin of the night with two minutes remaining in the game, as a pair of charity shots by Gebers made it 76-44. York managed just one more layup before the final buzzer, and UNO grabbed the 76-46 win.
York was led by Mayara Santos, who had 13 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Keishell Paul also finished in double figures with 12 points.
The Mavericks return to action on Thursday, Nov. 18, traveling to Missouri S&T. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Rolla, Mo.
