Martin Shines for Mavs in 79-73 Loss at Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The UNO men's basketball team opened MIAA play on Wednesday night, suffering a 79-73 defeat at Washburn. With the loss, the Mavericks are 3-2 (0-1 MIAA), while the Ichabods improve to 4-1 (1-0 MIAA).
Senior guard #Jeff Martin# starred behind the arc, hitting six 3-pointers for all 18 of his points on the night. The mark tied Martin's career best for threes in a game and also ties him for eighth all-time on the UNO career 3-pointers list, where he has matched Denny Johnston's 125 from 2004 to 2008.
Senior guard #Tyler Bullock# led Nebraska-Omaha with 20 points and seven rebounds, along with four assists and two steals. Bullock shot 7-for-12 from the floor and played a complete 40 minutes. Three other Mavs joined Bullock in double-figure scoring -- Martin, senior guard #Torrian Harris# (14) and junior guard Mitch Albers (12). Albers and Martin each swiped a pair of steals, while Harris and #John Karhoff# both pulled down four boards and had two assists.
Washburn was topped by Logan Stutz, who had 24 points and five rebounds, and De'Andre Washington, who had 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Jeff Reid also added 19 points of his own.
WU took an early lead on an opening 15-4 run with seven straight points from Reed and back-to-back baskets by Stutz. Bullock had the Mavericks' first eight points before Albers chipped in a 3-pointer to cut the lead to single digits. Despite two treys by Martin helping to bring the margin to five points late in the first half, Washburn still took a 32-26 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
The Ichabods kept UNO at bay for much of the second half, with the Mavs finally tying it at 52-52 with just under 10 minutes remaining. A 3-pointer from Reid and a layup by Stutz gave Washburn control at 61-55, but two free throws and a jumper by Harris and a layup by senior guard #Aaron Terry# tied the score again. Another three by Martin at 2:48 knotted the score again at 68-68, but WU made seven free throws in the final minute to close the contest at 79-73.
Nebraska-Omaha shot 47 percent (25-53) from the floor for the night, including 55 percent in the second half. Washburn finished with 46 percent team shooting, but outrebounded the Mavs 43-27 with 13 offensive boards.
UNO returns to action on Friday, Dec. 3, traveling to Fort Hays State at 7:30 p.m.
