Mavericks Capture First MIAA Win in Overtime, 85-8

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO men's basketball team garnered its first MIAA win of the season in dramatic fashion on Saturday night, grabbing an 85-80 overtime win over Northwest Missouri State at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the victory, the Mavericks improve to 4-4 (1-3 MIAA) on the season, while NWMSU drops to 2-6 (0-4 MIAA).
Junior guard Mitch Albers had his most dominant performance of the season yet, totaling 25 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Alex Welhouse joined Albers with 20 points of his own, finishing 6-for-8 from the field with an outstanding 4-for-5 night from behind the arc. Senior guard Tyler Bullock also pitched in 19 points, four rebounds and seven assists.
Defensively, Nebraska-Omaha was led by senior guard Torrian Harris, who pulled down eight rebounds and added six points, two assists and a block.
Five Bearcats finished in double-figure scoring – Dillon Starzl (15), Shaneel Narayan (15), Elijah Allen (14), DeShaun Cooper (13) and Arunas Simanavicius (10). Allen pulled down 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Bullock had a perfect shooting performance in the first half, going 3-for-3 from the field and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to tack on 10 points for the Mavs. UNO shot 71 percent from long range in the first half, with Welhouse and Albers each contributing a pair of threes and Jeff Martin hitting another.
After a layup by Welhouse at 15:21, the Mavs never trailed and took a narrow 32-31 lead into the locker room.
Albers came on strong in the second half, hitting six baskets for 13 points, with another seven by Welhouse and six from Bullock. With one minute remaining in regulation, Simanavicius tipped in a field goal to put his team up 71-69. He then fouled Harris, who banked in two free throws to tie the game for the sixth time, making it 71-71 and sending it into overtime.
Welhouse opened with a key shot and hit a free throw to put UNO out front 74-71. Harris then grabbed a rebound and knocked in a quick layup at 3:15, putting the Mavs up by five, but NWMSU's Narayan had a jumper and a pair of 3-pointers to keep the Bearcats alive. But with the score at 81-80 with 16 seconds to go, Welhouse and Albers hit both of their free throws to seal the win at 85-80.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 18, hosting Lincoln. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
