Mavs Produce Power But Drop Opening Doubleheader

DENVER, Colo. - Five different Mavericks hit home runs on opening day but they dropped a pair of one-run games at No. 16 Metro State Friday afternoon. The Mavericks will continue their season-opening Colorado trip with a twin bill Saturday at 1 p.m. Central against Colorado Mines.
Nebraska-Omaha, ranked 12th in the preseason poll, scored first in both games but the Roadrunners came back both times for identical 7-6 wins. The opener went into nine innings.
The Mavericks were down by two in the seventh inning of game one before Lindsay Slocum drove in two runs to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The Roadrunners (2-0) scored on a bases loaded fielder's choice to finish the game in the ninth.
The Mavs had 12 hits in the game from 10 different players. Treightin Yates and Emma Wright each had two.
Molly Feichtinger led off the first inning of game one with a walk and then Katelyn Hinton later gave the Mavs a 2-0 lead with a homer. A three-run shot by Roadrunner Sarah Rusch in the second inning erased that lead.
Wright tied the game for UNO with a home run in the fourth but Metro State scored twice in the fifth to go back up.
Beth Haley started the game in the circle for UNO and gave up five runs off three hits and three walks.Melissa Negrete entered in relief in the fifth and finished the game, suffering the loss.She gave up two runs off five hits and struck out five.
The Mavs used the long ball in game two to grab an early lead as well. Slocum led off the second inning with a single and then Kristi Meneely walked. Alli Hukill later hit a three-run shot to left center.
The Roadrunners scored a pair of runs in the third and then the fourth inning. Slocum had led off the fourth with a homer for UNO the score was 4-4 to start the fifth. After the Roadrunners scored two more runs Yates hit a two-run blast to center field to tie the score. She drove in Feichtinger who reached on a single.
A base hit and then a walk set up Amber Roundtree's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
Negrete once against entered the game in relief and suffered the loss. Slocum had given up the first four runs in 3 1/3 innings before Negrete gave up the final three.
Yates was 3 for 4 in the game and the Mavs had eight hits while Metro State had 13.
