Bison Storm Back in Ninth to Beat Mavs, 12-11

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Nebraska-Omaha baseball team took a nine run lead into the top of the ninth inning against North Dakota State University Monday night, but it wasn't enough as the Bison stormed back with 10 runs to take the lead and get the come from behind win at Lake Myrtle field, 12-11.
The Bison scattered nine hits in the inning, after being allowed just five heading into the inning. UNO had the the lead for the entire game up until the ninth inning. The loss drops the Mavs to 10-4 overall, while the Bison improve to 3-8. UNO finishes the RussMatt Invitational with a 2-3 record.
The Mavericks got on the board in their first opportunity at the plate first, putting three runs on the board. #Andrew Hansen led off with a single to left field to open the inning. Tyler Lundy reached after being hit by a pitch. That brought up Tyler Splichal with runners on first and second. He ripped a double down the right-field line scoring Hansen and moving Lundy to third. Lundy would later score on a wild pitch making it 2-0. Jeremy Klein# hit a sacrafice fly to center field that scored Splichal.
UNO put multiple runs on the board again in the bottom half of the third inning. Splichal led off with a single, followed by a #Travis Jacobi# double down the left-field line that got Splichal to third. The Mavericks took advantage of a Bison fielding error that allowed Klein to reach base while Splichal and Jacobi scored on the play. By the end of the inning, UNO had added four runs and led 7-0.
NDSU responded with a two-run inning in the top of the fourth when Freshman right-hander #Max Huerter# got into trouble by walking a batter, hitting a batter and walking the next. Max Casper singled and Tim Jallen walked, but Huerter got out of the jam by getting Justin Kline to ground into a 643 inning-ending double play after allowing the two runs.
The Mavs opened it up again in the bottom of the fourth putting three more runs across the plate to extend the lead to 10-2. #Jake Benne belted a two run single with the bases loaded. Trevor Gappa# tried for a double, but was thrown out at second after driving in Klein on the play. Benne went 3-for-3 with three RBI in the game.
Huerter, who got the starting knod for the first time as a Maverick, went four innings for the Mavs in his first career start. The Omaha native allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out two batters and walking four. Fellow freshman #Jeff McNichols# got the call in relief in the fifth inning and struck out the side in his first inning of the season.
UNO added another run in the bottom of the sixth on another NDSU fielding error that allowed Klein to score to put the Mavs up 11-2. McNichols continued to pitch great in his first ever outing. He recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, striking out two more Bison batters. The Omaha native had seven strike outs before allowing the Bison to start their comeback as he gave up four runs before being taken out for #Mike Kubo who gave up four more runs in the inning. Zach Croonquist# was then brought in to try and close out the game, but ended up allowing two more runs, and the eventual game winner which gave him the loss.
The No. 16 Mavericks will play their last game in Florida tomorrow when they head to Tampa to take on the seventh ranked University of Tampa Spartans (22-5 overall) at 5 p.m. (CST).
