Hornets Take Two From Mavs to Win Series

BOYS TOWN, Neb. - The No. 10 Emporia State baseball team downed the No. 26 UNO squad in both games of Monday's doubleheader to win the series 3-1 at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The Hornets won the first game 7-6 in seven innings and won game two's slugfest, 34-19.
The Mavericks got out to a 1-0 lead in the first after #Jake Benne#'s RBI single.
ESU used the long ball in the second to score five runs from a three-run shot by Dorian Williams and a two-run blast by Jeremy Francis to go up 5-1.
#Andrew Hansen and Brett Koehn# each ripped RBI singles to bring the score to 5-3 in the third. ESU's David Albritton hit a two-run single to increase the lead to 7-3.
UNO got within one run when Benne crushed his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, but the Mavs fell one run short.
UNO sophomore #Colby McCord# (2-1) got the call to make his first ever collegiate start, and first start since he made one in high school nearly three years ago. The Papillion, Neb., native suffered his first loss of the season going four innings. He gave up seven runs - all earned, on 10 hits while striking out three and walking one batter. #Max Huerter pitched two scoreless innings in relief and tallied two strike outs. Jeff McNichols# tossed one scoreless inning for the Mavs out of the bullpen.
In game two, both teams combined for 53 runs and 44 hits in the eight inning game which lasted four hours and seven minutes.
UNO got out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning led by a #Ryan Hook# grand slam. The Mavs looked to be in good shape with two outs and an eight-run lead in the top of the second, but four UNO fielding errors allowed the Hornets to take the lead, 10-8. ESU ballooned its lead in the third, scoring seven more unanswered run to push the lead to 17-8.
#Jeremy Klein led the bottom of the third off by smashing a triple down the right-field line and scored on a RBI single from Andrew James#. #Tyler Lundy# added a two-run double and Koehn a RBI single to saw four runs off the Hornet lead.
The Hornets would push two more runs across the plate in both the fourth and fifth innings, and four in the sixth to threaten the 10-run rule on the Mavs with the score at 25-13 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Hook singled to start the inning and Lundy hit a two-run shot over the center field fence to make it 25-15.
#Tim Urban# came to the plate with two on and belted his first home run of the season to pull the Mavs within seven runs of ESU's lead. The Hornets erupted for nine more runs on nine hits in the eighth to put the game out of reach and drew the 10-run rule to end the series.
A total of 14 of ESU's runs scored were unearned in the game.
The Mavs will complete their 12-game home stand with a pair of doubleheaders against Southwest Baptist beginning on Friday, April 2. The first pitch of Friday's series opener is slated for 12 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boystown.

Notes:
- Monday's game two was the most combined runs scored in a game since UNO lost 27-23 against Missouri Southern in 1998.
- Game two lasted four hours and seven minutes - home plate umpire Louie Sheridan was hit by a pitch in the first inning which caused a 15 minutes delay.
- Hook's grand slam was the second of the year for the Mavs - Hansen belted one against Regis earlier this season. It was Hook's second home run of the season.
- Benne threw out three Hornet base runners in game one who were attempting to steal second base.
- Benne extended his hitting streak to six games - his five-game streak of at least one RBI ended after game two.
- UNO's five errors in game two were the most in a game since its first game of the season against Regis on Feb. 13.
