Mavs Hold Off Bearcats For 10-8 Win

BOYS TOWN, Neb. - The No. 26 UNO baseball team ended a three-game skid with a 10-8 victory over MIAA rival Southwest Baptist in the first game of the series Thursday afternoon at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
The No. 26 Mavericks improve to 17-8 on the year with a 13-4 conference mark, while the Bearcats slip to 6-24 with a 5-18 MIAA record.
UNO took the first lead of the game when outfielder #Tyler Lundy hit a sac fly that scored Ryan Hook#. #Tyler Splichal doubled to left field and scored on a RBI single from Andrew Hansen to put the Mavericks up 2-0. Hansen stole second to get into scoring position and scored on a Colby McCord single. Travis Jacobi kept the inning going with a RBI single that scored McCord. Jeremy Klein# also scored on the Jacobi at-bat with the help a SBU error to cap off a five-run inning for the Mavericks.
SBU scored five runs in the fourth to tied the game up with two outs thanks to a UNO fielding error. The Bearcats scored all five of its unearned runs off of four hits.
In the four, Hook ripped a double to lead off the inning and scored on a Lundy single to give UNO its lead back. The Mavericks used another multiple run inning in the fifth to extent their lead to 10-5. Splichal belted his second double of the game to score Lundy and Hook.
The Bearcats capitalized on another UNO error with two outs in the sixth inning and sawed three runs off the UNO lead to make it 10-8. All eight of SBU's runs in the game were unearned.
The Bearcats would threaten in the top of the ninth when UNO closer #Brandon Dahl# got into a jam after walking the first two batters of the inning. A Maverick throwing error allowed Nigel Morton to load the bases with no outs. The senior right-hander struck out the next two batters and picked off Morton at first base to seal the victory. Dahl went 3.1 innings and gave up just two hits while striking out a season-high seven batters to earn his second save of the season.
Freshman right-hand reliever #Jeff McNichols# was credited with the win, which was the first of his career. He pitched 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out three Bearcat batters.
#Josh Bullock# (2-0) got the start for the Mavs. He went four innings and allowed five runs on six hits in the no decision. The Elkhorn, Neb., native fanned a career high 10 batters. He struck out the side in order in the first inning and had three Ks in the second inning as well.
The two teams will be back on the field on Friday, April 2 for a double header. Game one is slated for 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
