BOYS TOWN, Neb. - #Joe Holtmeyer# turned in his fifth double digit strike out performance of the season to lead the Mavericks to a 5-0 victory in game one, and the UNO offense erupted for 13 runs in the sixth inning of the second game en route to a 20-8 win to sweep Friday's doubleheader against Southwest Baptist Friday afternoon at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
Game one was picked up where it left off last night with the game being called after just one pitch due to darkness. #Brandon Dahl# was credited with the start since he through the first pitch out last night.
Holtmeyer (5-1) was brilliant again on the mound for the Mavericks in his eight appearance of the year. The sophomore right-hander tossed his second one-hit complete game shutout of the season to earn his fifth win of the year. He went all seven innings and allowed just the one hit while fanning 15 and walking three Bearcat batters. The Omaha native struck out the side in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Niko Saladis got the only SBU hit off of Holtmeyer in the second inning
UNO first baseman #Tyler Splichal got Mavs out to a 1-0 lead with a RBI double that scored Tyler Lundy#, who also doubled to reach base.
#Travis Jacobi# gave Holtmeyer a comfortable lead in the sixth inning when he ripped a two-run single to give UNO a 5-0 lead.
In game two, UNO took a 4-0 lead in the in the second when catcher #Andrew James# homered deep over the left field fence. It was his first home run of the season. Jacobi helped extend the UNO lead to 7-2 with a three-run shot over the center field fence with two outs.
The Bearcats responded in the fourth with a three-run inning. UNO starting right-hander #David Conrad walked in the first run of the inning and reliever Max Huerter# walked in one and was called for a balk which allowed the third run to score.
SBU would take the lead in the fifth inning, pushing three more runs across the plate to go up 8-7.
But the lead didn't last long as UNO responded with its largest single-inning run total of the season, platting 13 runs in the inning to balloon its lead to 20-8. The Mavs scored 10 runs in the inning before the Bearcats finally recorded an out.
#Colby McCord and Trevor Gappa each delivered two-run hits in their pinch-hit at-bats. Ryan Hook# followed with two-run single. That brought Lundy to the plate, who started the scoring barrage in his first at-bat of the inning with a two-run double. He blasted his fifth home run of the season, a two-run bomb over the center field fence to collect his third and fourth RBI of the inning.
Conrad (2-1) received the no decision in his sixth start of the year. He went 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on three hits while striking out three and walking five batters. Redshirt freshman #Jace Anderson# got the win in relief for the Mavs in his third appearance of the season. He pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless ball and didn't allow any hits while walking one batter.
The four-game series will wrap up tomorrow with a nine inning game which is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
