JOPLIN, Mo. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team continued to roll Sunday as it swept the Missouri Southern State Lions, taking all four games of the weekend series at Joe Becker Stadium. The Mavericks won the first game 9-8 in seven innings while taking the second game 16-6 to win their sixth and seventh straight games of the season.
With the wins, UNO improves to 9-1 overall with a 7-1 mark in the MIAA. The Lions fall to 3-14 overall and are 1-9 in conference play on the year.
In the first game, the Mavericks jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the second inning. #Tyler Lundy# ripped a two-run double in the first and #Brady Hohl# singled home two more runs in the second as the Mavericks were aided by two Lion errors that led to four unearned runs in the second. The Lions began to charge back in the bottom half of the second inning as Skyler Rawlins and Vince Pironti each hit RBI singles and CJ Matthews added a two-run single that cut the lead in half.
The Lions continued to close in on the Mavs' lead in the fifth as Joe Lincoln hit a lead-off single that was followed by a two-run shot by Jacob Taylor that made it a one-run game. Zurmehly then hit a pinch-hit homer that tied the score at 8-8. Andre Hansen scored the eventual game-winning run for the Mavericks by leading off the sixth with a double and scoring on a double-play groundout.
UNO had 14 hits in the game. Freshman right-hander #Zach Croonquist# (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in a relief effort with #Brandon Dahl# getting his first save of the season.
In game two, the Mavericks again jumped out to a huge lead as #Jeremy Klein# hit an RBI double in the first and UNO then plated four more in the second for a five-run cushion. Hansen collected three hits, including a double and RBI in the game.
Lundy went 4-for-6, including a home run, four RBI and a double to lead the Maverick offense. #Brett Koehn#, #Colby McCord#, #Derek Nelson and Brady Hohl# all recorded doubles in the game for the Mavs. All of the Maverick starters recorded at least one hit in the game.
Freshman right-hander #Matt Tew# got his first career win. He pitched 5 innings and allowed three runs on three hits. Tew didn't allow a hit or run until the fourth inning.
The Mavs' 16 runs scored and 20 hits in the game are both season highs for the squad. It's the most hits UNO has recorded since scattering 22 of them against Central Missouri on May 10, 2009 in a 12-9 win.
The Mavs will head to the Sunshine State to compete in the RussMatt Invitational where they will play seven games against five different teams. On Thursday, March 11, UNO will take on Concordia University, St. Paul at 9 a.m. (CST).
