Mavericks Sting Hornets to Earn Third MIAA Win

EMPORIA, Kan. - Despite a poor night in doubles, the women's tennis team walked away with a 5-4 comeback victory Friday night against Emporia State. The Mavs were swept in doubles, but #Traci Moklestad# restored the team's confidence with a win to start off the singles competition before they finished off the Hornets. The dramatic victory improves their overall record to 7-5 and conference record to 3-1. The Hornets fall to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
There was not much to write home about in the doubles competition as #Kelsey Haas and Traci Moklestad# lost in No. 1 doubles, 8-4. The loss is the pairing's seventh overall, dropping their dual record to 4-7. In No. 3 doubles, the pairing of #Mary Lausten and Kelsie Olson# saw their good run of form come to an end as they were defeated, 8-4.
In singles, the Mavericks put on some of their best performances of the season as sophomore #Traci Moklestad# won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Even with #Samantha Thomas#' tough loss, the Mavericks were able to bounce back again to win out the remainder of the singles matches. #Heather Hottman# took care of business against Emily Huston of ESU in No. 4 singles, 6-4, 5-7 (6-0). The close matches continued when #Kelsey Haas# defeated Kirsten Ford of Emporia in No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3. #Mary Lausten# clinched the victory in No. 6 singles when she handly defeated Alex Crowe, 6-2, 6-0.
UNO continues their season tomorrow when they take on Washburn up the road in Topeka. The match against the MIAA opponent is set to start at 10 a.m.
