Mavs Split Doubleheader With Tigers

HAYS, Kan. - The No. 25 UNO baseball team (23-10, 19-6 MIAA) won the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with Fort Hays State (23-10, 16-9 MIAA) 9-2 behind another complete game, double-digit strike out performance from #Joe Holtmeyer#, but fell in the nightcap by a score of 11-8 to settle for the split.
Holtmeyer (6-1) pitched his fifth complete game of the season and fourth consecutive to pick up his sixth win of the season. The sophomore right-hander fanned 10 batters in the game to bring his season total to 99, which moves him into third on UNO's all-time single season list, moving ahead of Larry Krenbiel who struck out 97 batters in 1965. Holtmeyer allowed two runs - one earned, on three hits while walking two. It was his fourth straight game with double-digit strike outs this year.
UNO got out to a 3-0 lead in the third with RBI singles from #Tyler Splichal#, #Jeremy Klein and Colby McCord#. FHSU responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs.
#Tyler Lundy# blasted his team-leading sixth home run in the fourth inning, a two-run shot to give UNO its three-run lead back.
McCord lead a four-run fifth inning for the Mavericks with a solo home run, his second of the season. #Trevor Gappa# hit an RBI double and Splichal ripped a two-run single to give UNO a seven run cushion.
In game two, the Tigers put up four-run innings in the second and fourth innings, which was highlighted by a three-run home run from FHSU's Chase Schippers in the fourth. UNO plated at least one run in each innings except the sixth and seventh.
The Mavericks got out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning when Splichal belted a two-run home run. FHSU scored one run in the bottom of the inning to get within a run. The Mavs carried a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the second until the first four-run outburst by the Tigers. Another hit and RBI by Splichal in the third brought the score to a 5-4 Tiger lead. Splichal was 3-for-4 in game two with four RBI in his 13th three-hit game of the season.
FHSU rallied back with two in the bottom of the third to take a 7-4 lead and UNO never could overcome the deficit in the game after the Tigers' four-run fourth inning. The Mavericks scattered 13 hits while FHSU tallied nine of them in the second game.
The Mavericks will try and come away with a split in the series with the fourth and final game of the series scheduled for tomorrow with a 12 p.m. contest at Larks Park.
