No. 25 Mavs Take Series Finale With 6-5 Win Over T

HAYS, Kan. - The No. 25 Nebraska-Omaha baseball team (24-10, 20-6 MIAA) used a four-run fourth inning highlighted by two Tiger errors to rally from a 3-1 deficit to beat conference rival Fort Hays State (23-11, 16-10 MIAA) 6-5 in Sunday's Series finale at Larks Park. The two teams each won a pair to split the series.
UNO's big fourth inning began with a double from #Jeremy Klein to lead off the inning and was followed by a walk from designated hitter Tim Urban#. With runners on, #Trevor Gappa# attempted a sacrifice bunt which was handled by FHSU pitcher Andy Lewton who overthrew the first baseman to allow Klein to score. #Ryan Hook had an RBI double in the inning and Jake Benne# drove in a run on a ground out to the second baseman.
The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Payne, but UNO pushed the lead back to two in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI double from Urban which scored #Brady Hohl#. FHSU once again pulled within one run in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, but were unable to tie the game up.
Freshman #Ryan Bolt# (1-0) was credited with his first career win. He came out of the UNO bullpen in the bottom of the sixth to relieve starter #Matt Tew#. Bolt went 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one and walking two.
#Brandon Dahl# picked up his third save of the season. He tossed 1.2 innings of hitless ball to close out the game for the Mavericks. The senior right-hander lowered his team-leading ERA to 1.20 in his ninth appearance of the season.
Freshman first baseman #Tyler Splichal# led UNO at the plate going 2-for-5 with his team-leading 18th double. The Mavs had five doubles in the game.
The Mavericks will continue their conference road trip when they head to Topeka, Kan., to take on Washburn in a four-game series. The two teams will play doubleheaders on Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18 at Falley Field. Saturday's first pitch is slated for 2 p.m. while Sunday's first game starts at 1 p.m. All four games can be heard live and free of charge on Teamline with Yano Mangiameli calling the action.
