Holtmeyer Ties Strikeout Record; Mavs Split With I

TOPEKA, Kan. - Sophomore right-hander #Joe Holtmeyer# recorded his 112th strikeout of the season to tie Nebraska-Omaha's school record for the most in a single season after fanning 13 Ichabod batters to help the No. 29 Mavericks to a 5-2 win in the first game of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against Washburn.

Holtmeyer, who leads the nation in strikeouts, sat down Vicente Vieyra swinging with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to pick up his 13th strike out of the game which marked his 112th of the season to tie former UNO pitcher Barry Miller who recorded 112 of them in 1961. The record has stood since then, nearly 50 years ago. Miller reached the mark in 82 innings pitched while Holtmeyer needed 61 2/3 innings to tie the record.

Holtmeyer (7-1) went all seven innings to earn his seventh win of the season in his fifth straight complete game of the season. He allowed two runs – both earned, on just one hit. The win ties Holtmeyer's single-season mark of seven wins which he reached as a freshman in 2009. He is now fifth on UNO's all-time career list with 189 strikeouts.

The Maverick bats got going in the top of the fourth inning with #Tyler Splichal leading off with a double. He scored on a wild pitch for the first UNO run of the inning. Brady Hohl's RBI single drove in Andrew Hansen to go up 2-0. Travis Jacobi# ballooned the lead to 4-0 with a two-run RBI single.

The Ichabods got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth inning. David Wade drew a walk to start the inning and Brian Gomez singled, which was the only Washburn hit of the game. With the bases loaded, Holtmeyer walked Vieyra to bring in Wade from third. Gomez scored the second Washburn run of the inning when Travis Cruz grounded into a double play.

#Tyler Lundy# blasted his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the seventh to add an insurance run.

Washburn's Vieyra hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to bring in Wes Joy from third base for the game-winning run as the Ichabods topped the Mavericks 3-2 in the nightcap.

Senior right-hander #Brandon Dahl# (0-1) took his first loss of the season after giving up two hits and the run in 1/3 of an inning pitched. It was the first run he had allowed in five games.

UNO got its runs from Hohl, who tripled in the second inning to put the Mavericks up 1-0. He hit an RBI single in his next at-bat in the fourth to put UNO up by two runs, but Washburn answered back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to tie the game.

#David Conrad# (2-2) got the no decision in his eighth start of the season. He went 6 innings and allowed two runs which were both earned on five hits while striking out five and walking four.

The Mavericks (25-11, 21-7 MIAA) and Ichabods (16-15, 15-13 MIAA) will close out the series on Sunday, April 18 with another doubleheader. Game one's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Falley Field. Both games can be heard live on Teamline with Yano Mangiameli calling the action.
