Weekly Notes
The Nebraska-Omaha baseball team will wrap up its regular-season action when Central Missouri, the top-ranked team in Division II visits for a four-game series. Games times were shifted due to rain in the weekend's forecast and will play two doubleheaders. The Mavericks and Mules will now open the series on Saturday, May 1 in the first of two doubleheaders with the first game at 1 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday, May 2 with the first game at 12 p.m.
A Look At The Mules
The University of Central Missouri Mules enter this weekend's four-game tilt as the top team in Division II in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper rankings. UCM is also the top team in the NCAA II South Central regional rankings. The Mules bring a 40-5 overall record with a 32-4 conference mark into the series, having won their last six games. UCM's 21-3 win over Truman on April 26 clinched the regular season MIAA title for the Mules.
At the plate, the Mules are led by Chance Tuttle who is hitting .446 with 66 hits, including five triples and 11 home runs while slugging .797. Tuttle has knocked in 52 RBI and has scored a team-high 64 runs. Brooks Martin's 9-0 record to go alongside his 1.72 IP and 77 strikeouts lead the Mules on the bump. Martin is tied for the team lead in innings pitched with 57. 2/3 on the year. Opponents are hitting .192 off him this season.
The Series
UCM leads the all-time series, 15-8. Six of those meetings came last season, including twice in the postseason, with UCM winning four of the six games. UCM won the regular season series 3-1 on its home field. UNO topped UCM 12-9 in the MIAA Championship game, but the Mules got revenge with a 14-1 victory when the two teams met six days later in the NCAA II Regional on May 16.

No Lower Than No. 3
The Mavericks will finish their second season in the MIAA no lower than No. 3 overall. Emporia State currently holds down the second spot in the standings by one game over UNO. The Mavs have to at least split with Central Missouri to have a shot at jumping up to second in the standings, depending on how ESU does against Missouri Western on the road. ESU won the series 3-1 over UNO earlier in the season and holds the tiebreaker. UNO finished fourth in the standings last season and went on to win the 2009 MIAA Baseball Championship tournament.
Holtmeyer Tosses No-Hitter; Sets UNO K Record
#Joe Holtmeyer# broke UNO's 49-year old school record for strikeouts in a season set by Barry Miller in 1961, recording his 113th strikeout of the season. The sophomore topped it off by throwing UNO's first complete-game no-hitter since 1995 in an 8-1 win over Northwest Missouri State on April 24. Derek Mueller tossed UNO's last complete-game no-hitter in a 10-0 win over Midland Lutheran College on April 5, 1995. Holtmeyer (8-1) went all seven innings, giving up the one run on a sacrifice fly by Bearcat designated hitter Landinn Echardt in the sixth inning. He finished with 12 strikeouts while walking four and hitting two batters to earn his career-high eighth win of the season. Holtmeyer earned his record-breaking 113th strikeout against the first batter of the game he faced, sitting down Nick Pfeiffer swinging. He had at least one strikeout in every inning to bring his 2010 total to 124 while stretching his career mark to 201, which ranks fifth on UNO's all-time career list.
The right-hander leads the team with 68 2/3 innings pitched and is second with a 1.57 ERA. He leads all of NCAA Baseball – Division I, II or III, with his 124 strikeouts, 16.24 strikeouts per nine innings (minimum 40 IP) and is tops with 3.41 hits allowed per nine innings. In his last six outings, Holtmeyer has been a strikeout machine, fanning 79 batters with double-digit K's in each game. In those six games, he sports a 0.86 ERA with six runs allowed - four earned, on just nine hits with six-straight complete games, a no-hitter and two shutouts.

Hansen Has Reached Base In Every Game This Season
Senior second baseman Andrew Hansen has reached base safely in all 44 of UNO's games this season, and has reached in base 45 consecutive games, dating back to the last season's 14-1 loss to UCM on May 16 at regionals. Hansen has started all 44 games so far in 2010. The Lakeville, Minn., native leads the team with 41 runs scored on the year. He currently ranks second on UNO's all-time career list with a career batting average of .382. Hansen's 50 career doubles is second on UNO's all-time list. Hansen led the nation with 33 doubles last season and has 17 on the year in 2010.
Lundy Lifts Hit Streak to 14 Games
Senior center fielder #Tyler Lundy# leads the Mavericks with a .443 batting average, 74 hits, 41 runs scored, four triples, seven home runs, 48 RBI and is slugging .713. His 74 hits leads the MIAA while his .443 average is second. Lundy is currently riding a 14-game hitting streak, the longest by a Maverick this season. Lundy has 26 hits with 13 RBI and is hitting .491 in that stretch. Two more hits would put Lundy in a tie for 10th on UNO's single-season hits list with 76.
Lundy has 22 multi hit games to go along with his 15 multi RBI games this season. Lundy helped lead the Mavs to a 12-2 win when he scattered five hits against Missouri Western on April 21. The Minot, N.D., native had four multi hit games, three doubles and scored six runs in his last six games with an average of .591 at the plate against Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri.
Splichal Stellar At The Plate
True freshman #Tyler Splichal# is second on the team with a .424 average, 70 hits and is slugging .642. He leads the team with 21 doubles, which is tied for 11th in Division II and is third on UNO's single-season list. Splichal is tied for first on the team with 22 multi hit games - including a team-high 14 three-hit games. Rarely a strikeout victim, Splichal has been sat down on strikes just 6 times in 165 at-bats this year. He is averaging a K in every 27.5 at-bats, which is eighth on the NCAA's Toughest To Strike Out list in Division II.
Stop That Man - He's a Thief!
With 13 stolen bags this season, junior #Travis Jacobi# is climbing up UNO's career stolen base list. He has 38 which is tied for 10th all-time. Last year's team leader in SBs (15) is second on the squad in 2010. He is yet to be caught this season on 13 attempts. Jacobi matched his career-high when he swiped three bags against Missouri Southern on March 6.

The Coaches
#Bob Herold# begins his 11th season as head coach of the Mavericks. The 1972 graduate of UNO was a 1971 NAIA All-American for the Mavericks. He is 372-218 (.630) all-time as a college head coach. The Maverick skipper picked up his 350th career win against on March 7 with a 9-8 win over Missouri Southern State. Herold is assisted by #Chris Gadsden# (11th Season) and Dan McGinn (10th Season).
Tom Myers is in his third season as head coach of Central Missouri. He is the 13th head coach in the program's history. Myers' career record at UCM currently stands at 131-37.
What's On Tap?
UNO has secured a spot in the 2010 MIAA Baseball Championship, which will be held May 6-9 in Kansas City, Kan., at Community America Ballpark. The Mavericks will be no lower than the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Currently a game behind Emporia State, UNO could overtake the Hornets to earn the No. 2 seed, depending on how the final weekend of the regular season finishes out. Regardless of where UNO finishes, it will play its first game of the tournament on Thursday, May 6. The winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
