No. 1 Mules Sweep Mavs Sunday To Split Series

BOYS TOWN, Neb. The Nebraska-Omaha baseball team was swept by top-ranked Central Missouri Sunday afternoon by scores of 13-8 and 17-3 to close out the four-game series. The Mavericks (32-16, 28-12 MIAA) settled for a sweep with the Mules (42-7, 34-6 MIAA) to close out the regular season. It was the first time all season that UCM did not win a series.
The Mavericks' 28-12 conference record gives them a third-place finish and the No. 3 seed in the 2010 MIAA Baseball Championship on May 6-9 in Kansas City, Mo. It's the best finish by UNO since joining the MIAA last season when it finished fourth.
UCM posted eight runs in the first inning of the first game, scoring five of its runs with two outs. The Mules took an 11-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth with UNO coming to the plate. The Mavericks shaved six runs of the lead, making it 11-8.
#Ryan Hook hit a two-run single and Tyler Lundy# belted a three-run shot over the center field fence in the inning - his team-leading eighth of the year. The six-run inning got UNO within three runs with the score 11-8.
The Mules added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to put the game out of reach. The Mavericks had their chances, leaving the bases loaded in the first and third innings.
In game two, the Mules again took an early lead, this time platting three in the first. They pushed four more across in the second and ballooned the lead to 14-0 after a seven-run third inning. UCM scored at least one run in each inning except the fifth and sixth. The Mavericks plated runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings.
UNO's pitching staff combined for 19 walks in the two games while UCM allowed just two on the day - including none in the second game.
The Mavericks will travel to Kansas City, Mo., for the the 2010 MIAA Baseball Championship on Thursday, May 6 and will face No. 4 seed Fort Hays State at 7 p.m. at Community America Ballpark. The game can be heard live on Teamline with Yano Mangiameli calling the action.
