KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The No. 30 Nebraska-Omaha baseball team opened the first round of the 2010 MIAA Baseball Championship with a loss to fourth seed Fort Hays State 4-1 Thursday night in the third and final game of the evening at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The Tigers plated a run in the first to go up 1-0. UNO tied it 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning on an #Andrew Hansen sacrifice fly that scored Brady Hohl# for the only Maverick run of the ball game.
FHSU added two in the fourth and one in the fifth. UNO batters were retired in order in the fifth, sixth, seventh, eight and ninth innings of the game.
Freshman #Matt Tew# (5-4) took the loss for the Mavericks. He went five innings, giving up four runs - three earned, on six hits while striking out three and walking three batters.
On the hill for FHSU was senior southpaw Matt Augustine (7-3) who went all nine innings for his five complete game of the season. He allowed one run on just six UNO hits. Augustine retired the last 16 Maverick batters that he faced.
UNO was out hit 11-6 by FHSU in the game. The Mavericks left six runners on base in the game.
The Mavericks, facing elimination from the tournament, will play the top seed Central Missouri Mules on Friday, May 7at 3 p.m. at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. UCM beat Northwest Missouri 12-2 by 10-run rule in the opening game of the tournament on Thursday.
Notes: #Tyler Lundy extended his hitting streak to 19 games on the year...Andrew Hansen#'s consecutive streak of reaching base ended at 49 straight when he did not reach base Thursday night.
