Mavs Drop Extra-Inning Heartbreaker To Mules, 10-9

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Nebraska-Omaha baseball team was eliminated from the 2010 MIAA Baseball Championship by top seed Central Missouri 10-9 in a dramatic game that saw six lead changes and needed three extra innings to decide a winner. A wild pitch by UNO closer #Brandon Dahl# allowed Cory Deedrick to score from third base for what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the 12th.
UNO took an early 2-0 lead in the first as UCM starter Matt Curtis walked in two runs with the bases loaded. The Mavericks took their largest lead in the fourth, platting three runs on a #Tyler Splichal double and an RBI single from Tyler Lundy#. The single extended the Lundy's hitting streak to 20 games.
The Mules stormed back in the fifth with five runs and took their first lead of the game, 6-5. The lead would only hold up until the bottom half of the inning when #Travis Jacobi# ripped a two-run triple to give UNO its lead back, 7-6.
UCM took the lead back again in the seventh off a Tyler Ruch two-run home run. Splichal tied the game back up with an RBI single, making it 8-8.
Right-hander #David Conrad retired the Mules in order in the eighth and ninth innings to give the Mavericks a chance for a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth. Jeremy Klein# started the inning off with a single and Jacobi followed with a double to right center field. Klein, the winning run, was held up at third base on the double, instead of being waived home for what would have been a close play at the plate. UCM got out of the inning with Klein and Jacobi stranded on base.
Mules' first baseman Nick DeBiasse blasted a solo shot off Conrad the 11th to give UCM a 9-8 lead. It was the first home run Conrad allowed all year.
#Jake Benne# tied the game back up on a fielder's choice RBI in the bottom of the 11th.
#Joe Holtmeyer# got the start for the Mavericks, riding a seven-game winning streak, but took the no-decision. The sophomore went six and 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs - all earned, on 10 hits, which were all a season high for the MIAA's Pitcher of the Year. Holtmeyer, averaging over 16 strikeouts per game, tied his season low with six in the game while walking three.
Conrad relieved Holtmeyer and tossed four and 2/3 innings. Conrad allowed just one run on three hits and struck out three batters in a solid outing for the right-hander who struggled in his start on May 2 against the Mules. Freshman #Jeff McNichols# (2-1) took the loss.
Mule closer Nick Phillips picked up his second win of the season, tossing four and 1/3 innings. He gave up one run while yielding just three hits.
The game saw six different lead changes and lasted nearly four hours. UNO out hit UCM 15-14. The Mavericks made no errors in the game, while the Mules committed one.
The Mavericks will await their regional tournament fate when the NCAA announces the six teams that will represent the South Central Region at the 2010 NCAA South Central Regional tournament on May 13-16.
