Mavs Host Washburn, Central This Week

OMAHA,Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (1-3-0, 1-1-0 MIAA) looks
to improve its record this week as it hosts back-to-back home games at UNO Soccer Field beginning Thursday. The Mavs will host Washburn University (0-2-1, 0-1 MIAA) on Thursday, Sept.16 at 4 p.m., followed by a match up against University of Central Missouri (3-0-0, 1-0-0 MIAA) on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 12 p.m.
Mavericks 1-1 in Conference Play
The Mavericks opened Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action on Sept. 9 against Missouri Western at UNO Soccer Field. The 2-0 victory against the Griffons marked the only win for the Mavericks in 2010. Dropping their second MIAA contest, 1-0 at Truman State on Sept. 11, the Mavericks will play only MIAA games for the remainder of the season. UNO is bidding for its ninth-straight NCAA post season appearance.
The Series
The Mavericks have a 5-2 series advantage against Wahburn. UNO has won the last two meetings between the two schools. The Mavs defeated the Lady Blues, 1-0 at UNO Soccer Field on Oct. 11, 2009, then again in Topeka, Kan., 4-0, on Oct. 22, 2009.
Sunday's game will mark the 13th meeting between UNO and UCM. The Mavs own a 10-2 all-time record against the Jennies. UCM's second-ever win over UNO came last season on its home field with a 1-0 victory on Nov. 7, 2009. UNO has outscored UCM 35-7 in the past twelve meetings.
Scouting The Lady Blues and Jennies
In 2010, the Lady Blues are off to a 0-2-1 start and are 0-1 in MIAA play. Washburn battled the University of the Incarnate World last week to a 1-1 tie, but failed to score against MIAA member Missouri Southern in a 2-0 home loss on Sept. 9. The Lady Blues opened the season in Austin, Tex., where they were shut out 1-0 by St. Edward's University.
The No. 4 preseason-ranked Jennies are 3-0-0, and 1-0 in MIAA action. Last week, the Jennies defeated Southwest Baptist, 3-2 in MIAA action and handled Texas Women's University, 1-0 on Sept. 4. Central Missouri opened the season with a 4-2 road win over Dallas Baptist in Dallas, Texas. The Jennies will play back-to-back road games, facing Northwest Missouri State on Thursday, followed by the Sept. 19 match at UNO Soccer Field.
The Coaches
Head coach Don Klosterman is in his 12th season at the helm of the Maverick women's soccer team. He has compiled a 184-48-9 overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2009). In
those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons (2002-2007) and led the team to a 2005 National Championship. During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005).
Eighth-year head coach Tim Collins has led the Lady Blues to two NCAA regional tournament appearances in the last three seasons and an MIAA regular season title in the program's fourth season. He led the team to an 11-8-1 record in 2009 and an 8-7-1 record in MIAA play.
Central Missouri is led by Lewis Theobald who enters his fourth season as head coach. Last season he guided the Jennies to a 13-5-2 mark and 12-3-1 in the MIAA. Last year, his team missed the NCAA postseason for the first time in four years.
Exstrom leading the way for the Mavericks
University of Nebraska transfer #Bri Exstrom is the team's current leader in goals scored with two. The sophomore forward scored a pair of goals in the team's only win of the season last week against Missouri Western. Juniors Hayley Renshaw and Hilary Horvatic# have each scored one goal apiece to round out UNO's scoring total.

The Mavericks will continue MIAA play next week with back-to-back road contests at Southwest Baptist University on Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. and at Missouri Southern State University on Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.
